Watched Dracula Untold with Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper and Charles Dance. Its a fantasy/horror version of the story of Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) and how he chose to be a vampire to save his country from the turks. Not a masterpiece but fun to see a movie trying to fix this historic person into the dracula myth. In real life he was a prince in a part of Rumania and often fought Turks. Stoker just borrowed his name, Dracula (means son of the dragon), in spite of never having anything to do with vampires before Stoker.
......the old Impaler was certainly a monster in his own right.......Romanian defense minister Ioan Mircea Pașcu asserted that Vlad would have been condemned for crimes against humanity had he been put on trial at Nuremberg......his methods were effective, but horrendous.......
A cruel man certainly. But i doubt he was a sadist. He wanted to install fear in his opponents and used the impaling for that purpose. Close to where he lived a bit later we have another human monster who was a sadist, the hungarian countess Elisabeth Bathory. I think she is even worse.

  • ....never thought he was a sadist, just a genius in horrific ways to torture and kill....now Bathory....yeah, she was a real piece of work....hell, they both have their own action figures!!!

  • WOW! Actionfigures....  She stood trial in 1610 accused of killing 650 persons. In her castle they found dead remains of many of them. A true serial killer before the concept was known. Sadly the stories of her bathing in the blood of virgins to prolong her youth are later inventions and probably not true. They are so good they should have been true!

  • Promising Young Woman starring Carey Mulligan -- holy cow, what a movie. You might think you know what it's going to be about from the trailer, but that's just the setup. Wow.

  • I watched the latest version of Emma the other day. It was ok, but I prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow version, it was more romantic and funnier. The new one was a tad bit hard to follow.

  • Audrey Rose... I haven't read the novel but the movie seemed like an attempt to cash in on the success of The Exorcist a couple of years previously. A mysterious man appears in the lives of a couple and claims their daughter is the reincarnation of his deceased daughter. Performances were ok but the snails pace and lack of scares make it a chore to sit through.

  • Watched.....

Blithe Spirit,  I really wanted to like this much more than I actually did, it's well made and the cast are good but for me the whole thing comes across a bit flat and lifeless, not as good as the original directed by David Lean.

Vampires Vs The Bronx, a horror comedy, a group of kids discover vampires have moved into the neighbourhood and are picking off the locals and taking over the Bronx. I was surprised to see this was a movie released last year, it has a dated feel to it as if it was made in the 90's, so saying its a moderately enjoyable bit of hokum, the cast ase decent and it passes the time painlessly enough

Rewatched Friday The 13th.  This remake from 2009 is actually a remake of Part 2, as remakes go it's actually not too bad, this type of movie is never going to win any awards for originality or acting but this is a respectable slasher flick which knows what's expected of it and it delivers.

  • I've watched To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters. Much as i actually like the Bronte sisters, and Emily especially (i consider both her poetry and Wuthering Heights to be absolute top class as poetry and novels go) i think this movie is a misnomer. It is really more about Branwell, their brother, and his trials and tribulations than the sisters. As such it is good. But when they include a reading of one of Emilys fantastic poems while she is walking a dog they play load music so you cant hear the words. It is as if they dont believe the words are enough. So wellmade but i would have liked more of the sisters and less of Branwells different failures.

  • I watched "The Lake House" (again) tonight. Is it a chick flick? Yes. Is it illogical? Yes. Do I still love it? Yes.

Keanu Reeves often annoys me, (though I liked him in Speed 😁) but I adore Sandra Bullock and she really carries this movie.
And I like love stories, I just do.

  • Rewatched another couple....

    Psycho 3

A decent sequel, directed by Perkins, a woman shows up at the motel who reminds Norman of his first victim...

    The Cave

A team who specialise in deep Cave exploration become trapped a couple of kilometres below the surface, they soon discover they are not alone down there.

    Exorcist 3

Direct sequel to the original movie, based on Blatty's novel Legion, , it ignores the events of the second movie. Creepy and atmospheric. A series of murders has the hallmarks of a serial killer who was executed years ago, detective Kinderman tries to unravel the mystery.

    The Thing

Prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing, it shows what happen at the Norwegian camp before the events of Carpenter's classic.
