  • Has someone here watched The White Lotus?

what am I not getting? Yes, i’ve watched the first episode only, and it was boring as hell.

How on God’s green earth did this win a shit ton of Emmys and not Barry? Not Better Call Saul? Not Yellowjackets?  Not Only Murders in the building? ( and those are just the ones i watched).

    Someone please explain.
I just watched the first episode and I'm not feeling it, either. I'll give it a bit longer, but it's going to have to do a lot soon to keep me going.

I have watched 2 1/2 episodes and quit. If you get past that and have an a-ha! moment, please tell me.

  • I decided to stick with it when I discovered there were only six episodes. I really wanted to know who was being loaded on board the airplane in the opening segment. I think I get what the show is going for. Definitely not my favorite, and it has more cringe-worthy moments than I generally like, but I'll see what they do in season 2.

You are the scouting mission. Report back. 🙂 i’m not quite sold to continue on.

  • It's all about privilege--those who have it without considering how it impacts those who don't. It asks some interesting and difficult questions.

So, do you believe it was better than all the shows I named above that were up against it for Emmys? Did it deserve its many wins against those terrific shows? All of which you have seen too.

After watching such stellar work and seeing this beating them in practically every category, I jumped in thinking, wow! This must be something above and beyond.  And I couldn’t have been more disappointed.

I’m going to finish the first season so I can have a clearer and more honest opinion.

  • They upped their casting game for season 2, which includes F Murray Abraham, Tom Hollander, Michael Imperioli and Aubrey Plaza, to name just a few. It's set in Sicily this time.

Ok. The positive.  The writer/creator did accurately capture a certain something. A little too on the nose. But…

this beautiful location and certain characters had an underlining ugliness — an aspect I just couldn’t enjoy in any way. I wasn’t surprised. I wasn’t educated. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat. I watched this with about the flattest affect possible.

That being said, the second season cast is more intriguing to me so, I will give it a try and hope two isn’t just a regurgitated “same as it ever was” copy of season one with more popular faces.

Just barely started season 2. Minutes in and I get a different feel. While I do think this is still going to revolve around the distribution of power and social class,
     —  hints at humor that weren’t so well played in season one.

SNL had Lizzo as musical guest. Her set design is from a painting that I have a framed print of.  It was my mom’s and has a painful memory.  But I was so proud of myself that I immediately knew it.

This was absolutely a complete 180 from season one. Loved season two.

  • Aubrey Plaza always manages to make me feel uncomfortable. There's something just a little bit off about the characters she plays.

She played the same character in Parks and Recreation.  She didn’t really fit Ethan.

  • Been binge watching this show from the late 70s...haven't seen it sine it was originally broadcast. It's funny, good performances, Arthur Lowe's Irish accent is a bit off, he strays into liverpudlian every so often. Very enjoyable overall.

I agree, although it's a shame we never had the chance to see them in happier times.

No. Not on mine either but like I said, that second season was way more entertaining.

While the first season was just ugly to me, the haves and have nots, the second season was the haves and have nots but showed how sex could level that playing field. The whole season was weaponizing sex.

I am not a fan of gratuitous sex in anything. If you are throwing sex into any creative endeavor as filler, you’ve lost me. Yawn. It has to make sense.  So, this season made sense. The whole season was about sex and it had to be true to that premise.
I loved the set-up of the floating body we see at the beginning.  That storyline was pretty creative in my opinion.

  • My biggest problem with both seasons is how good people were corrupted -- the newlywed bride in S1 and the noveau riche couple in the second.

Agree. It was sad really. The bride in season 1 was particularly upsetting.  She didn’t want to sell out.

She was trying to convince herself more than the entitled asshat she married when she kept saying, “i’ll be happy. I promise. “ over and over and the look on her face — a little of me died for her in that moment.

    I hated that first season.

Through your connections, are you hearing anything about Staged?

  • Only that it's really good! I can't wait for it to be released in the US.
