Look. I love the royals. Love them. BUT, they need to turn into real live people in today's world. They have opinions and feelings and ideas and make mistakes independent of each other and the Firm -- this stiff upper lip and not allowed to be real humans drives me nuts.
I am sorry for Meghan that she was/is having mental health issues. I believe her. I believe she asked for help and I believe she received nothing. We saw it play out with Diana and after the fact, we learned even more. And obviously they learned nothing. They talk the talk on mental health issues as spokespeople, but they don't walk the walk. It's not lip service, it's action.
Where I'm having problems with this interview is the part about what color the baby's skin would be.
Why is that racist to wonder?
When I was pregnant, I wondered, What color is his hair going to be? Light like mine or dark like my husband's? Will he have my blue eyes or my husband's brown? Will he grow tall like my family or will he be practically "little people" sized like my husband's side. Oh please don't let him have my dumbo ears hanging off his little bald skull. Please give him my family's cheek dimples! It's natural to wonder what the kid is going to pick up from each side. So, if you are in an interracial marriage, as in Harry and Meghan's case, why is it racist to wonder if the baby's skin will be light like his or darker like her side of the family? I don't understand that.
What we watched on that interview was a game of telephone. Meghan was not in the conversation where the baby's skin color was brought up. So, she is relying on Harry to tell her what was said. But did she hear the tone in which it was said? The context? Could she look the person in the eye and see if it was just a genuine wonderful mystery to ask or a hateful malicious racist comment? So, she tells Oprah this. With this "victim" look on her face. As a black woman, I guess hearing anyone asking that might put you on edge, but you don't immediately jump to it was racist. CONTEXT CLUES. TONE. That's what tells you what's in someone's mind. She wasn't in the conversation to see or hear either. Then, when she told Oprah that, notice Oprah's reaction. The outrage ramped up the dial way past 11. She was so appalled. So, now, that story is getting worse and worse. Everyone is so sure that was racist. That is just not true.
We are seeing real live telephone in action. Each person is adding their own tone to the comment. And that tone is uglier and uglier. I won't buy into that.
We are condemning someone who isn't coming forward to speak for themselves and clarifying what their thoughts and feelings and intentions were when they wondered that question.
I personally think it was Charles who commented. After years of watching his droll persona that almost always backfires, I think he was just wondering what this beautiful little grandbaby was going to look like. It is natural to wonder and be curious.
I am so sad that people have to take this to the ugly place.
I'm truly baffled why they felt the need to speak-out to strangers. Sure, share with family and friends all your thoughts and feelings. But why include the world? What purpose did it serve?
Someone answer this. I just don't have a clue. I have speculations and they are all unkind.
As to why they spoke out i'm cynical. Now that they dont get money from the royal house anymore they must get it from somewhere else. No doubt they got a sizeable amount for this interview. And the more spectacular it was the more they can get for the next one. But thats me, i might be totally wrong. I hope i am.
thanks for the answer kurben— i learn and try to understand from other’s viewpoints.
My answer: knife block.
(take that motherfewkers, um... except I'll just need someone else to do the stabby, stabby thing for me please?)
A machete which I've been using to cut slices of cheese....
