  • I got a notice the other day that my library card was going to expire.  So, I drove to the library and had to renew it at some side alley doorway.  I probably could've scored a kilo of pure Columbian there too.

Of course you can't go in unless you've made an appointment to use their computers so I was forced to do business in the alley.

I asked about checking out some books and he said, "what genre would you like, we have some books sacked up for check out."

While I see the fun of a grab bag as a 5 year old, as a 100 year old, I want to pick my own books.

I had to go home and log onto the site and place requests and then I got a notice like an hour later that one of my books was ready for pick up.  sigh.  I know everyone is just doing their best.

I will be picking up this book because I saw her on Graham Norton's show and she was hilarious.  Some of her stories -- shocking!  I can't wait to read it.

I am reading my Lady in Waiting book and I tell you what, just because someone has money doesn't make them smart or classy or better.  They just get to be uber weird because they have a lot of money to pay people to be uber weird for their entertainment.

Lady Glenconner's husband was a damn freak.  Hiding behind that stiff upper lip, title, money and posh British accent.  Unstable insane freak.

  • Oh, just got notice from the library that my Woody Allen book is in.

I was going to purchase Lady in Waiting and Apropos of Nothing, but decided I must stop buying every single book I want.  I must become choosier in my twilight days.

  • @cat. -- The Ten Thousand Doors.... is really a good story.  I'm almost halfway through and I just love her choice of words.  Very lyrical and whimsical.  Lovely.

I think it's like The Talisman and the Dark Tower -- The Drawing of the Three, but things I read keep comparing it to Narnia.  I have not read Narnia.  Have you and is it a better comparison than The Talisman and the Dark Tower worlds?
I am so sorry I didn't get your earlier question answered.

I am so glad you are enjoying the book. I have only read the first Narnia book but I felt the same way about Ten Thousand Doors in regards to The Dark Tower and Talisman. I just kept thinking, There are other worlds than these. I really, really loved this book. I am waiting like Holly for thriftbooks to get some copies. I read it on kindle but I MUST have a real copy.

  • I finished The Troop by Nick Cutter. It was good the first half, it lost a little steam for me in the 2nd half but overall a decent story. It is heavy on the gross-out factor though.

Started Deliverance. Not very far into it, because it's been very busy around here. I am doing an informal reading challenge (not something I signed up for, just something I stumbled across and thought I'd do, just for myself) and one box I need to check off is a book published the decade you were born. So I picked Deliverance. I have seen the movie but first time reading the book.

Still need to get back to The Unwilling, as well.

...the movie outshone the book in my opinion...

I agree that the movie was iconic, but i love dickeys vocabulary. The poet in him comes through.  You might discuss this with doc. He and i had a great discussion about deliverance and he has some good insights.

I have noticed he has a definite style to his writing so far. It took me a second to get used to it.

There is definitely a poetic base to his word choice and cadence.

Tabitha King is the same way.  If you really pay attention, you can hear her poetry background in the way she writes.

I also struggle with her work, but in all fairness, I have not read the books that she is most noted for and are the popular stories.
