  • Oh good! We have Prime.

  • I enjoyed Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl on Netflix -- a breezy retrospective of her career told in contemporary interviews and archival footage.

  • After watching Thirteen Lives on Prime, we watched the documentary The Rescue on Disney+. This is, I believe, the correct order in which to see them; otherwise, we would have complained about the inaccuracies and shortcuts taken in the feature. We enjoyed them both.

  • One comment I saw said it was like watching your parents fight! We had to keep reminding ourselves they're only 26 (George) -29 (John) years old.

We watched the first part last night -- it is very, um, detailed. It is fascinating to watch the creation of such songs as Get Back and Let it Be and Long and Winding Road in real time but, as Linwood Barclay observed, it's a little like watching an author write a novel. My wife wasn't nearly as interested by it as I was, I'd say. I'll probably watch the rest, but I'm not sure she will.

I was intrigued by how the principle conflict wasn't between Paul and John, but rather between Paul and George, who quits the band at the end of the first part.

Paul is definitely the most driven of the group, George feeling under-appreciated. John is very happy-go-lucky but not bringing much of his own music to the group at this point. (Maybe he will once their backs are up against the wall.) Ringo is just going along with everything, rarely saying anything but always able to bring the beat when called upon.

Some of the hangers-on are interesting. One guy really has a thing for this coliseum in Tripoli where he wants them to stage the concert, perhaps even taking the audience with them on a ship. Big ideas. Dick James shows up and is a total bore!

Finally able to see this. Not done yet but you got all this spot on.

Watching george and paul made me uncomfortable. I know, It’s history. It’s done. But i was really uncomfortable.
Ringo and john totally stay out of it.

Yoko is just there. But I do find her presence odd.

I enjoyed watching and listening to the process and evolution, but it seems like nothing is really getting done and the songs aren’t refined to the version we know. Amazing how they bring it all together.

  • Part 2 of Get Back — i don’t know what was said to George to get him to come back, but he looks miserable most of the time.

  • Did Yoko break up the Beatles? No. But she irritates the crap out of me.

The lads were on pretty friendly terms after the concert on the rooftop. John Lennon messed things up. It was his fault.

We watched Neil Young: Heart of Gold, directed by Jonathan Demme in 2005. It's mostly a concert video with a few candid interviews with band members at the beginning. The first half of the concert is his current album at the time, Prairie Wind, which I'm not familiar with, but then he gets into all the old familiar tunes. An enjoyable way to spend the evening. I especially enjoyed his cover of "Four Strong Winds."

I watched this too and also enjoyed it. He did an interview with Conan OBrien on his podcast that was really good.  Nov. 2019.

    Django and Django — Netflix

“Through interviews with filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Ruggero Deodato, this documentary explores the legacy of Sergio Corbucci's spaghetti Westerns.”

tarrantino is absolutely fascinating when it comes to the subject of movies. He knows his stuff. Now, you might not agree with his opinions, but they definitely  come from a strong base of insight and knowledge.

Again, his podcast Video Archives (free) with Roger Avary is well done.

Its amazing how they managed to, after the relative mess that was the Let It Be recordings, to get back together a few months later and make the Abbey Road album which is one of their best.

  • I tried to stick with Weird: The Al Yankovic Story but I bailed about halfway through. Some interesting performances but it just didn't work for me overall. [Not really a documentary, either -- a fictional biopic?]

It was made by Germans. In english language. Many interviews with biographer, girlfriends, friends, teachers and so on. It was showed on the swedish national television channel, TV1. Name was something like Al Pacino - The Reluctant Star. Many of the interviewes pointed out how he loved acting and mostly the interaction with an audience and how he hated things like Galas and such.

The man from the future. :o

Bull Sheet?   I am leaning this way.  Interesting.  But goodness, this man has no records of being alive.
