The repair person is here - I say it that way because her name is Jenna. It's weird - I just had a dream this morning that it was a female who showed up to fix the furnace and then lo and behold - she called me.

I had meant to be up and when she said she would be here in 10 minutes I had to scramble to get up, washed and dressed.

  • Good morning - I am having second thoughts now - yesterday I was told the problem was with our circuit board and it would be $600 to repair. Plus I asked about getting a new humidifier installed as the old one crapped out (it's located on the side of the furnace) - that would be an additional $685 :o

She asked me "How long do you plan to continue investing in the furnace?" which I thought was a funny thing to say so I asked what she meant. She said our furnace was from 1990.

It turned out she was suggesting a new furnace.

Anyway now after Googling away and looking at YouTube videos I'm wondering if it's something as simple as a dirty flame sensor.

It's early here (8 a.m.) and some places don't open until 9 but I'm thinking if I can get someone out here for a second opinion that would be good.

I paid the $139 service charge for the one hour service call and she said the parts should be in by Friday (or possibly Monday).

The weird thing is I feel like I'm being sexist in doubting her. She was on the phone to someone describing the problem so I feel like it was a second hand opinion.

Damn! It's too bad it's so cold out plus we have about an inch of snow on the ground but still I don't want to get ripped off.

I am starting to think it would be a good investment, especially when we're ready to sell the house.

So - is my face red - turns out it WAS the circuit board. Today I had a guy in from Furnasman - he was unscrewing things, making a lot of noise etc. At one point I was wondering if he was going to break it!

He brought in a part from his van and tried that out but it didn't work and he said it also was not the flame sensor (so much for YouTube videos).

He was thinking it was something else (but I cannot remember the name) :|

Finally he told me it was the Honeywell circuit board. I paid for the service call with a check and he said he would call to let me know the availability on the part.

Here's the weird part - he said it's unavailable - hmmmm - how come I was told by the other company it will be in by Friday or Monday at the latest? I'm guessing they would rather just install a brand new unit.

We DO have a fireplace LOL but still - this needs to be taken care of - think I should contact Manitoba Hydro and see if they have a program in place re upgrading to a more energy efficient unit.

Thanks for the advice anyway - like you said - it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.
