We always enjoy Craig Johnson's novels (he writes the Longmire series), and he sends out a short story every Christmas. Often they're funny incidents, but this year's was poignant. The Perfect A.

Okay. I had a really interesting dream. To me.

i was in a survival situation. The visual swam in and out of being a game show like Survivor to being real life. 

About 30 of us were placed on one end of a pool. The pool was big and long and was set-decorated as a serpentineish Amazon river. Lots of foliage on either side. 

On either side, high in the canopy, were marksmen with bows and arrows. The arrows went from suction cup things to real arrows. 

We all started out on the deck and had to get in the water. As long as we touched the deck of the pool with a hand as we lowered ourselves into the water, they couldn’t shoot at us. But as soon as we let go, fair game. 

Before we got in, we were sipping drinks. I told the guys on either side of me, take your straws. 

So, we lower in, and the goal was to get to the end of this river without being shot. People start swimming, mostly trying to stay under water as long as they could. Of course, the arrows pierced the water and got them, again sometimes suction cupped and sometimes real. I held my two guys back touching the deck. 

People were picked off quickly so “dead”,  fake dead, bodies floating. And here was my plan. 

While still touching side, me and the two guys stretched our legs and snagged a body each. And then we maneuvered under each body, straws in mouth. And we kept the bodies on top of us and touching each other. And we moved through the water. We were a Roman turtle (testudo). 

Arrows were flying around us but we weren’t getting hit. Our “dead, fake dead”body shields were ravaged. We made it to the end where each of us would have to reach with our hand and get our own green flag on the opposite end. Reaching for them was vulnerable because hitting our hand or arm before we got the flag eliminated us. 

At this point, we had the concrete wall of the pool in front of us, so a pocket where we could slightly rise and breath being protected by our shields from the other sides.  I then took all our straws and put them together and reached with the straw to get the flags and drag them in the water. As each fell in, we grabbed one and when we all three had our flags, we stood up out from under our dead and won. 

This was even more detailed than I shared. It was crazy detailed. Sometimes the bodies protecting us were dead, shot with real arrows. Sometimes the bodies were faking dead and were talking to us as they got hit with suction cup arrows in a game of Survivor. 

I think this was a message for 2023.  My year will be about just surviving. 🫤
