    14. Night of The Reaper (2025) 3/5 A slasher movie that takes its inspiration from the 80,s. A few unexpected twists and turns and none of the Scream type rules and dark comedy. This takes the slasher genre seriously. The sister of a murdered babysitter returns to town to revenge her sister and strange and creepy things start to happen. Jessica Clement and Ryan Robbins in the leads.

  • 10) "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016) FTV

"Jyn's father is forcibly taken by the Galactic Empire to help them complete the Death Star. When she grows up, she joins a group of resistance fighters who aim to steal the Empire's blueprints."

This is set just before Star Wars: A New Hope.
It was good, I enjoyed it.

  • I loved Rogue One, I felt it captured the tone of the first movie A New Hope.

  • 12. Brothers Grimm (FTV)

The famed story-gathering duo make more money pretending to fight the supernatural, but get more than they bargained for.

Let’s get this out of the way: the movie is messy and unfocused, much of the intended humor is awkward and falls flat, and the leads have no chemistry. The CGI is pretty bad, even for 2005, even if you make the argument that it’s supposed to look like a fairy tale, that doesn’t account for the technical flaws like shifting scale and “floating” effects whenever the camera moves, which is often. So yeah, the film is flawed and much here doesn’t work.

However…there’s a great storybook autumn vibe here that’s very appealing. The practical sets are amazing and must have been expensive, never has a muddy run-down village looked so cinematic. Many of the quirky Terry Gilliam flourishes are here, even if they don’t quite cohere as a whole piece. The side characters are at least interesting even if the main ones are not. I was never bored despite the nearly 2 hour runtime.

If you like Sleepy Hollow and Monty Python, you might enjoy.

    3 out of 5 stars.

    11. My Father The BTK Killer* — Netflix

really interesting . My heart does break for kerri. She is traumatized. I was angry at her when this first happened, blaming Stephen King wanting celebrity. Well, he was already a celebrity and she was  not blaming her father for putting her and her family in this situation.  Stephen, like all writers, takes inspiration from the world.

But she was young, scared, angry and roont. She was trying to right her upended life.

But, she does say because Stephen used her family for A Good Marriage, it gave her a voice, the courage to work through this. I wish her well.

  • 12. Men*— Tubi

whew. This was a doozy. An acid trip of abusive male misogyny.

Rory Kinnear plays all the men in a small village save one. And Jessie Buckley, a good actress, is the main character needing some time away as a new widow of an abusive man.  Lots and lots of symbolism.

She was a dick initially, but I think time and acceptance has made her very aware of where the true blame lies.

  • 13. Tales of Halloween (FTV)

Anthology of horrifying and humorous Halloween tales.

This was a pleasant surprise. For an anthology with 10 short films, 7 or 8 of them were actually pretty good, and things moved along pretty quickly (total runtime is just 95 minutes). There’s no wraparound story but the stories are linked by a radio DJ (played by Adrienne Barbeau reprising her character from “The Fog”) and sometimes characters and settings pop up a second time in different films. The vibe is all about spooky October 31st fun, even when the material gets pretty dark, so it’s surprising how well it all holds together in tone, considering this is 10 different directors.

Highlights for me were the ridiculous Friday the 31st where a slasher’s rampage gets interrupted by a claymation alien trick or treater, and The Night Billy Raised Hell where a boy befriends a real life demon who shows him how to really play tricks. Another fun one was The Ransom of Rusty Rex, which does a darkly comic interpretation of the O. Henry story The Ransom of Red Chief. There are lots of cameos from the horror industry including Joe Dante, John Landis, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, Lin Shaye, and several others.

Perfect for getting into the Halloween mood.

    3.5 out of 5 stars.

New drop.  I liked this. Vulgar rich people on a yacht, money, arrogance, greed, entitlement. And then muuuurder. What’s not to love?

Something about Keira Knightley bugs the shit out of me, but she did a great job here.

They find dinos instead plus a russian scientist that tells they have plucked them from back in time with a collider and then lost track of the experiment. This could have been a good adventure movie but it has its flaws, the CGI now and then is not that great, it is way too long for its own good (135 minutes) and it takes itself to seriously. Not so much horror as adventure and some running from and fighting against dinos and bad guys. An Australian movie that reminded me of Jurassic World: Rebirth, also from 2025.

  • 14. Monster— The Ed Gein Story* — Netflix

I watched all 8 episodes. It was graphic, unsettling and also tedious at first — it was creeping me out and I just felt uncomfortable. Of course, this is a fictional tale, based on facts and true crime that was embellished. It had to be or otherwise it just would have been another documentary.

I hung in there to the end and I have to say, it got way more interesting in the last three-ish episodes. We touched on the movies: Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs. We visited other serial killers inspired by Gein.

Charlie Hunnam gave a performance I applaud him for. Risky subject matter, allowing himself to be open to the graphic scenes he was in — just wow. He was brilliant. And Laurie Metcalf as Mother— she did an outstanding job also.

This ended up being something totally experimental and creative and if you can watch it with an open mind, it was really out of the box.  I ended up appreciating the hell out of it. Bravo.

With David Duchovny and Julianne Moore in the leads. I only wish they could have decided where to anchor their movie, in which genre i mean, and not hop back and forth all the time. You watch it but you will forget it soon. It keeps the pace yo its credit and is a reasonable 100 minutes long.

  • 14. The Enchanted (FTV)

Rural Florida farmer ignores warnings and gets involved with a strange backwoods family with cult-like vibes, but finds the truth is even stranger.

Another film from the All the Haunts Be Ours volume 2 folk horror collection, The Enchanted is certainly an oddity. I can’t say I’ve ever been to central rural Florida (nor have I seen any films set there) so the film often feels like it’s set in a strange, almost alien landscape. The heavy early 80’s “synth of doom” sound predominates the soundtrack and the whole movie has a leisurely (some would say too leisurely) vibe that mostly works. Weirdness aside, the film barely qualifies as horror, it’s more of a dark fairytale.

This is low-budget, locally produced film with only one “star” actor (Julius Harris, who at the time was mostly known for a handful of blaxploitation flicks). Some of the performances are a bit shaky, and the casting director made some odd choices—for the longest time I thought the woman lead was the mother when it turned out she was supposed to be another sibling. The movie often has more of a TV movie feel, and indeed it apparently found a home on the CBS movie of the week, probably causing a lot of head scratching. The final reveal isn’t particularly satisfying, but I didn’t hate the movie.

For patient viewers in search of something different.

    2.5 out of 5 stars.

  • 15. Circle* — who will be the last person standing? You have about 4 days before it’s gone off of the service. Netflix.

Aliens have taken humans hostage and now they have to decide who lives, who dies.

The lesbian? The black man? The handicapped person? The kid? The soldier? The cop? It’s pretty much the conversation vibrating through America right now. The first 5 minutes, I knew how this was going to play out. But the final? science decided. Very interesting if you like social experiments.

    16. The Wrath of Becky* Netflix — deliciously satisfying for so many reasons.

  • 5. Worlds Most Evil Killers Ed Gein TV Episode 2017 - IMDb....very little new information, yet the footage of "townies" discussing how "normal" Ed appeared is fascinating....that's what interests me....the psychopathy, not the ghoulish aspects.....

    • Beast Of War......

    • An Australian ship is sunk by a Japanese fighter plane during WWII, a small group of survivors stay afloat on some wreckage, but a large great white shark comes cruising and picks them off one by one.....

    • A mediocre effort by the director Kiah Roache-Turner, I much preferred his last effort Sting about the space spider running amok in an apartment block. Beast Of War has a couple of decent momens but overall I found it disappointing.

  • 16. The Bride from Hades (FTV)

Reluctant to enter an arranged marriage, a 17th century Japanese man falls in love with a ghost.

Also known by the less sensational title Peony Lantern, Bride is based on an ancient Japanese tale. This version involves the festival of Obon, a sort of version of All Souls Day in Japan, so this is seasonally appropriate for Halloween viewing. At its core it is a Japanese ghost romance story, so while much of the film is subdued and atmospheric, this one stands out for having the occasional shocking scene, usually with the spectral encounters, as well as some decent special effects.

In my opinion what holds this back from being a truly great classic is the sudden shift away from the ghostly romance towards a pair of unscrupulous characters who are played broadly as if comic relief. It appears that someone felt the core story wasn’t enough and there had to be a “lesson” taught about the dangers of greed. This for me deflated much of the otherworldly and dreamy atmosphere that had been set up to that point. However, a surprisingly violent ending made up for this tangent.

    Essential viewing for J-horror fans.

    3.5 out of 5 stars.

  • 17. Triangle — Tubi

Once again, lots of symbolism. A Sisyphus loop. Oops, that might have been a spoiler, but if you pay attention, it isn’t. Because, if you introduce Sisyphus in Act whatevs, he has to go off by the end. A not-as-good Ghost Ship. (Shut the hell up, I love Ghost Ship).

I need a palette cleanser from all these horror think pieces. Which brings me to:

    18. Calendar Girl Murders — Youtube

Oh man. Pretty vapid shit. So many stereotypes. Very 80’s, every MTV video expanded to a TV movie of the week. Ugh.

Robert Culp, Tom Skerrit and a gorgeous Sharon Stone.
