Not exactly any new ground broken but its solid enough in its own way. Every episode covers about 3 hours of a day so all action takes place in a single day with a few flashbacks to make ckear the connections to a year ago. Canadian TV-series. Has gory parts thats not for the fainthearted.

  • 23. Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell* — Tubi

    Yes. This is real.

“Body builder Shinji meets his ex-girlfriend to help with her research on haunted houses. Accompanied by a professional psychic, they visit an abandoned house, where they find themselves trapped and tormented by a ghost with a thirty year grudge.”

Billed a comedy/horror — I’ve sunk as low as I can go I’m pretty sure. Very Japanese (which, sorry. NONE of the big Japanese horror movies have scared me. I think they’re pretty boring honestly). But, there’s so much to choose from and I was tired, I really didn’t want to have to think too hard. Mission Accomplished.

There are chopped-off legs karate kicking our protagonist in the face no less! and a severed head using an ankle and foot to maneuver around — bad to the bone. It was…. uhhh… a good effort.

    I just can’t dis this.

I haven’t done shit in my life and these people made a film that I sat in America and watched. I say they won.

  • 25. Beauty and the Beast (1978) (FTV)

The daughter of a struggling merchant moves into a decrepit castle inhabited by a frightful beast.

This 1978 Czechoslovakian film plays like a gothic horror movie version of the familiar fairy tale. The setting is very dark and mouldering, you can practically feel the damp chill in the air. Instead of Disney’s cheerfully animated candle holders, horrific humanoids lurk in every shadow. And as for the Beast, he is not cuddly or leonine, but has talons for fingers, and his head is a filthy mass of feathers with a sharp beak like a carrion bird, but with sadly human eyes. This is the most frightening version of the Beast on film.

The characters themselves aren’t quite as fleshed out as they could have been, they are played more or less straight, just like in the fairy tale. The stepsisters are horrible and greedy, the father is a broken man, and the daughter who lives with the Beast is an innocent. Despite (or perhaps because of) their simplicity, we do care about the main characters and their plight, and the film achieves more emotional resonance than other versions of this tale. At its core it’s still about the power of love to prevail, even in bleak circumstances.

My favorite version of the classic story.

    4 out of 5 stars.

Wow. What a disgusting, ugly, despicable piece of shit this woman is.
Those poor babies, they broke my heart. And her family was so right. There's no frigging way they'd have been given the same benefit of the doubt while detectives were building their case had the shoe been on the other foot. 😔
I'm so glad justice finally came. It will never bring their mama back though. 🥹

    24. The Monkey* — Hulu

The look of the film was done well. Everyone did a good job. The story is terrific. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a leeescense for the minkey.

This adaptation is more about the humor of “wtf, again? Still?” Not really the horror of it, even though horrific deaths are happening.

It’s a can-I-just-get-off-this-roller-coaster-now? situation for the lead character. He takes it in stride, tries to be practical about it. He fears the deaths and reacts to them, but not appropriately, he’s jaded. It’s all a day in the life.

I read the news today, oh boy (ho hum)
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
    I saw the photograph.

The last descendant of a cannibal clan stalks the London Underground subway system.

This 1972 British/American collab is recognized as the first modern cannibal film (it predates Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Cannibal Holocaust which kicked the genre into high gear). It capitalizes on the inherent creepiness of the subway system over 20 years before Jacob’s Ladder and Mimic. It stars Donald Pleasance as a cop searching for a killer long before his role as Dr. Loomis, and has a brief but memorable role by Christopher Lee as a member of MI5, the UK equivalent of the CIA. It’s the directorial debut of Gary Sherman, who went on to do Dead & Buried, Vice Squad, and Poltergeist III.

It has an impressive pedigree, but is it any good? For the most part, yes. Donald Pleasance’s police inspector is played with so much character and energy, it’s hard not to be riveted any time he’s on screen. The scene with him and Christopher Lee is a highlight, although they rarely actually inhabit the same camera shot due to their height difference of 6 inches! The underground killer was originally supposed to be played by Marlon Brando, so one wonders how that would have went, because the character mostly only howls and grunts, and utters the memorable line “mind the door”, the only English he ever learned from years of hearing the subway. The shots with him and his decaying trophies are dark and gruesome and occasionally artful.

The main character protagonists were unfortunately the weakest part of the film, there simply isn’t much to them. The man is a put-upon long-haired American 70’s stereotype and his girlfriend lacked strength and sensibility. Also, the film tended to drag when it lingered too long on the killer alone in his underground lair. A little would have gone a long way there.

A very British C.H.U.D. with just enough for cannibal horror fans to sink their teeth into.

    3 out of 5 stars.

This is not as gory as the third season was but a little more creepy. No supernatural things hinted at, just plain evil killer who has a motive even he has obviously lost his moral compass long ago. New actors and new story for every season apparently. But it is solid, not great because it uses a lot of old ideas but does it in a competent way.

  • 27. Black Phone 2 (FTV)

Sequel to the 2021 horror film has the child-abducting Grabber returning from the grave to wreak havoc on a summer camp in winter.

As a fan of the writing of Joe Hill (he is after all Stephen King’s son) I had read The Black Phone years before it was made into an above-average (but perhaps inessential) horror movie. When I heard the sequel wouldn’t even be written by Hill, I had sort of a “meh” attitude but it was a rainy day today so I canceled my usual nature hike and saw this one theatrically on a whim.

What we have here isn’t necessarily a bad film, but let’s get this out of the way, story-wise it’s essentially A Nightmare on Elm Street where Freddy Krueger goes to camp Crystal Lake during the offseason. No points will be awarded for originality here. Since we all know The Grabber (so ably played by Ethan Hawke in the first film) is dead, they had to figure out a way to get him to return for the sequel, and the answer they landed on was dream ghosts who are sometimes real, I guess. Hawke’s nuances and slow but powerful tension builds are all gone this time around—he’s been to Hell and back, after all.

Blake (the original abductee) and sister Gwen return as a sort of psychic Mulder & Scully team to get to the bottom of this black phone/dream stuff once and for all, and we’re subjected to many long dialogue scenes explaining every step of the way. Too many character arcs and storylines end up diluting each other, and the Christian couple (named Barbara and Kenneth, like we wouldn't notice) are played stereotypically stone-throwing and stupid. I liked the winter storm setting at a summer camp, but that’s essentially taking The Shining’s Overlook Hotel offseason idea. The sound design is aggressive and quite good, but I sometimes wondered if the editors didn’t have enough confidence in the visual material.

Seems especially redundant to say this about a sequel, but you’ve seen all this before.

    3 out of 5 stars.

  • 28. Spookies (FTV)

Party-goers stumble across an abandoned mansion filled with all manner of, well, spookies.

Spookies is a mostly schlocky film with surprisingly good special effects. It’s the kind of movie we horror fans like to discover every once in a while, the kind of movie you can’t believe more people aren’t talking about. All its strengths are in its outrageousness. There’s the totally unfunny “comic relief” guy who wears a T-shirt featuring a picture of himself (gotta get me one of those) and carries a puppet around the whole movie to say even more unfunny zingers. There’s the actress announced importantly in the credits as “for the first time on the screen, Maria Pechukas” who looks a lot like Madonna in her bridal gown phase. There’s the age-mismatched group of “adults” or “teens” or whatever the heck they’re supposed to be, and there’s a were-cat, a weird mastermind guy with a pulsating forehead vein, and his monk-like cloaked feral child assistant.

But most noteworthy are the special effects. This is a haunted house film that takes full advantage of the anarchic possibilities of the supernatural—there’s always something going on in this movie. We don’t just get zombies, we get mud-men zombies bursting out of the basement (all with nonstop flatulence). We don’t just get skeletons, we get Death himself swinging a scythe. We get a literal spiderwoman who catches you in her web and transforms from woman to spider before your eyes. We get a graveyard zombie chase sequence that goes on to the point where we suspect they’re just trying to pad out the runtime. Oh, and we get scaly puppet Gremlin-like creatures that the title “Spookies” likely was suggesting.

    Crap-tastic fun.

  • 29. Megan 2.0 (FTV)

The killer companion robot is revived to fight an AI global threat.

The original Megan (or more annoyingly spelled, M3GAN) was a horror film that took the creepy doll concept and updated it with technology. Despite what marketing wanted you to think, Megan 2.0 isn’t a horror film at all, it’s that “most easy for nerds to make fun of” genre, the techno-thriller. Well, I wasn’t thrilled, and if I was horrified at all, it’s what they managed to do (or more accurately, un-do) to this franchise in just 120 longish minutes. Ugh, has Hollywood ever made a convincing techno-thriller?

Some might say this movie wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, it’s obviously camp—didn’t I see the part where the robot girl sings a Kate Bush song? Sorry, calling it camp doesn’t get a movie off the hook for every logical fallacy, technological impossibility, and plot hole that plagues it. Plus, it obviously wants to be taken seriously, as they’re trying so hard to convince us of stuff like “social responsibility” and the emotional bond between these characters, so no, you can’t have it both ways. Look, I’m not a total grouch about these things, I like to shut off my brain and pass the time watching mindless action scenes, but given what they set up in the first film, this felt like a snarky, lazy betrayal.

Oh, and the CGI sucks too.

  • 30. Mill of the Stone Women (FTV)

Father of an ailing woman finds a way to cure her while keeping his wax museum supplied with new figures.

This is widely recognized as the first Italian horror movie in color, thus paving the way for later Italian horror masters such as Bava and Argento. The film does look beautiful but is in fact pretty stingy with its use of colors: the countryside is dark and gloomy, the titular windmill is all black and gray, even the costumes of the men are pretty bland. The actresses are allowed to show more color (one is a redhead) and when the wax figures burn (hardly a spoiler, this happens in every wax museum movie) the flames are brilliant.

Plot-wise this is fairly standard wax museum stuff, made a little more interesting by the inclusion of a sort of vampiric blood transfusion technique that the father uses to keep his dying daughter alive. Scilla Gabel plays her role well, reminiscent of Barbara Steele, and is allowed to show more than the usual amount of sexual aggression towards the male lead, played by a handsome but bored-looking Pierre Brice. The story is pretty predictable, things meant to be surprises can be seen by any savvy movie-goer a mile away, but the film hits all the right marks. It was something of a novelty hit in its time, but in light of what we’ve come to expect in this genre, the film is decent but average.

    Italian wax museum horror, it’s a no-brainer.

    31. Nosferatu in Venice (FTV)

The ancient vampire awakens to seduce and feed on women in 1988 Venice.

This was originally conceived as a sequel to Werner Herzog’s 1979 film Nosferatu the Vampyre starring the mercurial Klaus Kinski. Kinski was up to his usual antics and frustrated the efforts of one director after another—incredibly, FIVE directors had their hands on this film. Add an impulsive producer and budget cuts, and the film developed a reputation as a disastrous mess. Entire sections of the screenplay were re-written but not re-shot, so eventually it was up to the editing team to cobble together what they had.

Against all odds, we have a film that’s far better than it ever had any right to be. Look, any film with Christopher Plummer as a vampire hunter, Donald Pleasance (as a priest!), Kinski as the title vampire, and a Vangelis soundtrack is already starting on second base. While this movie isn’t a home run, it looks and sounds amazing and plays surprisingly well. It may not always be coherent (I still didn’t understand whether the costume ball was a flashback or meant to be contemporary), but not only is this movie compulsively watchable, so many sequences are downright beautiful. Full use is made of the eerie landscape of foggy twilight hours in Venice, perhaps the second-best example of a Venice-set horror film (the first being Don’t Look Now). I particularly enjoyed the simple scenes of Nosferatu meandering around the city alone like any other person, but looking truly ghoulish.

Made me sad that there won’t be any more Klaus Kinski movies.

    34. The Elixir (2025) 4/5 FTV An Indonesian zombie movie that turned out to be quite good. A medicin company develops a new drug to halten the aging process. The boss tests it on himself and it actually works, his grey hair turns black and wrinkles disappear. He is very happy but after a few hours he turns and the infection is loose. First in his big family and servants, then to the village he has his fancy house in and so on. Fairly standard stuff but well done. The zombies are fast,, no slouchers here, The movie keeps the pace high throughout. I liked it. Netflix
