"In a galaxy where hyperfuel is in high demand, Han Solo gets involved in a large-scale heist within the criminal underworld and meets individuals who change his life."
I really liked this one, I think Alden Ehrenreich cast as Han Solo did a fantastic job capturing a lot of Solo's mannerisms.

Family man scientist helps vampires in a remote western town synthesize a blood substitute that will eliminate the need for killing humans, but a rogue group of vampires have other ideas.
Strangely entertaining movie in the western vampire comedy genre, if not the only example. For a comedy it’s not necessarily gut-bustingly funny like Blazing Saddles, it’s more of a lighthearted folksy vibe, almost like a family comedy, but it occasionally drifts into dark territory. The screen is crowded with characters, including a young bespectacled and mustachioed Bruce Campbell (who sadly doesn’t get enough screen time), and Night of the Comet/Valley Girl actress Deborah Foreman as a vampire waitress with a heart. There’s a loose and often illogical feel to this movie as if it were being made up on the spot, so mostly it gets by on its novelty and character charm, as well as an action-packed final third.
The film pushes the boundaries of the “rules” of vampires—these bloodsuckers have learned to cope with daylight using sunblock, and a wooden bullet accomplishes the same task as a stake, provided it goes through the heart. The film is weakened less interesting workplace and domestic drama elements (the wife has a past with the husband’s co-worker) and I was never really convinced that David Carradine was the most powerful vampire of them all—that honor went to western star John Ireland, in my opinion. There’s a nice 80’s western vibe (Silverado with vampires? Near Dark but funnier?) and an overall fun feel that made this an easy watch.
Have this playing in the background during your Halloween party.

I can’t really say much without spoiling. Interesting plot.
My struggle, that little shit. Thank all of the spaghetti monsters, Gods and lesser known tricksters that I had two damn good children. Man, I count myself blessed and lucky.
My sincere fears to anyone who has raised a hellion, a troubled child or walking devil splooge. You’re exhausted and scared.

19. Beast (2022) 3/5 FTV Idris Elba with two daughters in tow goes to south africa to reconnect with his dead wifes past. Runs in to a lion that has been hunted by poachers and has decided to strike back and ends up being chased by both lion and poachers. It is a chase survival in the wild horror thriller type of movie. Elba is ok. Exciting while watching but nothing that really dwell with you long afterwards. Entertainment for the moment and thats fine.
Dr. Jekyll attempts to cure lycanthropy using the serum that turned his grandfather into Mr. Hyde, with predictably chaotic results.
If you’ve seen a Jacinto Molina Alvarez (aka Paul Naschy) film you know what to expect: a burly guy who looks like he could be John Belushi’s Spanish brother, impossibly beautiful women with wide-eyed stares, gloomy but exotic settings, and a werewolf or Dr. Hyde—in this case, it’s both. This film has the usual bits about city people stumbling into a sinister old castle, greedy thieves who unwisely ignore local superstitions, and adds the gimmick of bringing the story to swinging early 70’s London. Were there really still go-go girls in 1971?
Naschy gives the audience what they want, although the story didn’t really draw me in until it shifted focus to London and then the energy picks up a bit. We get to see a woman getting stuck in an elevator with a man who is about the turn into a werewolf, an unconvincing whipping torture sequence, and Mr. Hyde going on a glorious rampage. How he managed to get a cape, cane and top hat on short notice after receiving the injection, I will never know--he looks like a combination Dog Day Afternoon's John Cazale and the guy from The White Stripes. I also enjoyed the character of Jekyll’s treacherous lab assistant, played to the hilt by the gorgeous Mirta Miller. Also a scene where someone gets shot but apparently with no bullet holes--I guess Naschy thought hammy acting was all you needed to sell the effect.
Part Hammer Horror, part Roger Corman, all Paul Naschy.

A girl living in isolation with her mother in the Catskills uncovers the dark powers that make them different than everyone else.
This is a movie from the Adams family (one “d”, not two), a cool family that makes their own movies, art, and music outside of the studio system, with a decidedly independent voice and an obvious affection for horror. If you liked their previous movie The Deeper You Dig, you’ll enjoy Hellbender, which leans more heavily into witchy stuff with strong female leads.
I don’t want to give away too much here but the plot essentially is a girl discovering her true identity. There is magic, violence, psychedelia, and the evolving dynamics between a mother and her daughter who has come to womanhood in isolation from the outside world. Now the girl wants to make friends and be “normal”, while feeling the inexorable pull of what she truly is. I also enjoyed the brief music sessions (they have a two-person rock band) that lyrically make sense to the ups and downs of their relationship, although these parts might be off-putting to some.
A unique and refreshing voice in horror, with enough familiar elements to make it accessible.

A turn of the century thief who betrays his gang holes up in a remote French chateau inhabited by strange beautiful women who have a sinister plan in store for him.
This is a Jean Rollin movie, and in fact might be the most Jean Rollin movie of all the Jean Rollin movies. So yeah, we know what to expect: sexy seductresses, sinister ceremonies, sumptuous sets, slow snail-like speed. I’m not particularly well-versed in Rollin (no relation to Henry Rollins) but I did enjoy the dream-like atmosphere of The Iron Rose earlier this year so I thought I’d give this one a try. My conclusion is that Fascination is good enough, but not great.
This one is more overtly sexual, with several softcore scenes before the plot really gets moving in the second half. The lead male is not likeable, and kind of dumb—we want him to get his comeuppance. The plot seems to stall out early and we play more of a waiting game to see what happens, although we can sort of guess. On the plus side, the movie really does look great, from the bloody opening scene in the abattoir to the candlelit rooms of the chalet, and the actresses are predictably beautiful. The movie does recapture some of the dreamy feel of The Iron Rose at times, especially towards the end.
Sexy French women with a dark secret in a spooky setting will be good enough for some.

Scurry.....
A catastrophic event leaves two people trapped underground, the crawl along curious tunnels but realise that something is following them....
An alien invasion movie, it was ok'ish, the performances were just about ok, the creature design was interesting but poorly executed with below par CGI.
High school seniors have a slumber party while a crazed killer with a giant drill lurks.
Released in 1982, in many ways Slumber Party Massacre is exactly what you would expect, and it can serve its purpose as comfort food for the classic slasher fan. Within the first 5 minutes we have established there’s a killer on the loose, there’s some female locker room shower nudity with gratuitous lingering camera shots, horny loser guys looking to score over the weekend, and there’s a kill. If this all seems like a parody of the slasher genre, that’s because it originally was intended to be one, then the studio forced them to play it as a straightforward slasher. But what could have just been another by-the-numbers slasher has a few interesting additional elements.
Despite conforming to many cliches (or embracing them), they made some room for creativity here. This was written, directed and produced by women, so it’s harder to criticize the film as merely pandering to a leering male audience. The women all have distinct characters and motives, a sense of humor, and definitely more than the usual toughness. At one point one of the guys even admits the girls could probably kick their asses if they catch them spying on them. One of the character just might be a lesbian, although in 1982 they didn’t lean into this very hard. While this is no feminist rallying cry, the drill bit (technically an auger bit) is definitely intended to represent a phallus—if you miss this not-so-subtle symbolism, you’re not paying attention. I wanted to rate this higher but the film sags quite a bit after the first 20 minutes. Stick with it, it picks up towards the end, and the finale is quite satisfying.
Title says it all.

20. The Guardian (1990) 2/5 FTV William Friedkin making a Supernatural horror movie, his first after The Exorcist. Sadly this is not as good. A tree demon takes human form in form of a nanny to baby children. Jennu Seagrove is good as the nanny in the lead but the whole movie is disconnected. It is written on the fly more or less and it shows. Both Friedkin and Seagrove later distanced themself from the movie calling it a could have been. Its a mess. It has some rather scary moments though but as a whole it fails. The scary moments save it and raises my judgment to a two instead of a lower rank.

Sibling twenty-somethings take a group of friends to the rural Florida house they recently inherited, not knowing it harbors a secret past involving a witch burning.
From first-time Italian director Alessandro Capone, who had written a number of 1970’s horror scripts. The film has a handful of decent scenes but a very jumbled and messy story connecting it all together. The acting is way over the top and the group of friends are beyond obnoxious, even for the slasher genre. The editing is bad (several times the music just cuts off harshly as we go to a new scene) but at least things move along pretty quickly. Some things are just so cringe-worthy they are unintentionally funny, but it’s not enough.
About an hour in, the movie oddly shifts from the house to a pair of priests in an industrial ruin, as if they ran out of things to do too quickly with the starting characters, or killed off people too fast and had to start over. By then I was kinda checked out. The witch seems to just equate loudness of voice with character, which is annoying, and the little girl actor appears to be genuinely harmed and in pain after one of the pyrotechnic effects goes off a bit too close to her face. Not cool, and this movie surely wasn’t worth anyone getting hurt over, let alone a child.
Not much witch, not much story.

21. Halloween (1978) 5/5 Probably the best slasher ever. Not for the faint of heart. Jamie Lee Curtis debut that lifted her to the stars. Also starring Donald Pleasence and Nancy Loomis. Directed and Scored by John Carpenter. The music is great, really elevates the tension. One of the true classics in the genre. But dont see too many of the sequels.......... I see this one for every Horror movie marathon. I dont exactly know why it works so well, carpenter has a lot to do with it, but theres something else that makes this worth seeing many times.
Recently widowed late night talk show host has a possessed guest during sweeps, with chaotic results.
In the spirit (no pun intended) of fake horror television broadcasts such as Ghost Watch and the WNUF Halloween special, Late Night does a good job establishing the feel of an actual 80’s late night talk show. It runs like a combination of Johnny Carson and Phil Donahue, with a wise-cracking co-host bandleader and grainy title cards (inexplicably, a few of which were shoddy AI-produced art). David Dastmalchian really commits to the role and holds it all together, conveying the right amount of talk show host polish without smarm, and an underlying sadness.
I enjoyed the over-the-top psychic reading bit, and the skeptic character who is obviously based on the Amazing Randi. I was less convinced by the performance of the possessed girl, who played the “creepy cult kid” trope a bit too on-the-nose for my tastes. I liked that the movie had several layers of things happening at once, and this feels like a movie that would reward repeat watches. For example, it just occurred to me that the name of the show “Night Owls” has a double meaning with regard to one part of the host’s backstory where he belongs to a secret society (I won’t give away too much here). The ending is an absolute shocking blast, so hang in there during some of the slower parts.
A fun dose of nostalgia for a bygone era of media.

The doors are locked and sealed and strange things start to happen. This was the good old days when every male wears a similar suit. I always feel like a penguin in one but they look perfectly natural.
see Bob’s review above. And yes, the style of filming really sells it.

Grieving over the loss of their daughter, an Irish couple moves to rural village where a strange ritual gives them hope for a family reunion---at a price.
The first horror film from Hammer Films in 30 years, Wake Wood was shot in county Donegal Ireland and has many familiar folk horror tropes along with an emphasis on the body horrors of Caesarian birth. Given the subject matter I expected a melancholy atmosphere, but the film is downright dismal, with none of the comic relief of Pet Sematary, nor the raw scares of Don’t Look Now, nor the intrigue of Wicker Man. By the time the couple makes a Monkey’s Paw-esque bargain with the town’s alderman (ably played by the film’s rare bright note, Timothy Spall), we basically know what’s going to happen for the rest of the movie.
And that’s the film’s biggest problem, familiarity. There are no real surprises here, just occasional jolts, and the film shows an uncomfortable amount of simulated animal suffering--if you’re sensitive to that, you’ll want to avoid this one. The couple are sort of pathetic, the husband puts up a few token efforts at resistance but his wife’s sorrow is all-encompassing and won’t be stopped, because the movie needs to keep going. The film is done well enough, but you won’t find anything here you haven’t seen before—well, I guess aside from a cow getting a C-section.
Average, gruesome and dreary, none of the color of Hammer.
3 out of 5 stars.
