  • Newsarama has an interview with "Dark Tower" colorist Richard Isanove here: http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/King/Isanove/IsanoveTower.htm.

There's also a glimpse at the art we've seen in pencil form - very cool.

    Marvel Dark Tower Update

Stephen and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said Stephen. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."

The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007.

  • King is the Executive Editor and Creative Director of Marvel's much-awaited Dark Tower comic book series and graphic fiction collections," said Diamond's press release. "King is directly involved in the creative aspects of this project, supervising all editorial and visual content. Robin Furth, author of Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower: A Concordance,' is outlining the 'Dark Tower' comic book series, providing scene-by-scene plotting, and maintaining the continuity and consistency of each story arc."

While the above implies heavy editorial involvement, many have taken note of the curious absence of King's credit as "writer" or even "scripter," as he is merely mentioned as being involved in editorial capacities. Marvel Comics has made no comment since the press release, but stay tuned to CBR News for more on this developing story
  • I guess I'm afraid of what I consider "Tom Clancy syndrome"--where a famous author allows his name to be used in promoting a book or series in which he may have come up with the original idea, but another author is doing the actual writing, then is published as "Tom Clancy's Op Center", for example. I hope this isn't "Stephen King's Dark Tower", by whomever.

  • According to the moderator on King's site, King IS writing the comics, but if Furth is outlining the comics, that doesn't make sense, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
  • PETER DAVID TO SCRIPT 1st 7 ISSUES of STEPHEN KING's DARK TOWER

“New Comic Series, Launching in February 2007, Explores the Origin of the Notorious Gunslinger Character “

NEW YORK – Marvel Comics has tapped prolific author and veteran comic book writer Peter David to script the first seven issues of the ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from Stephen King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower. The first issue is scheduled to debut in February 2007.

The series will expand the saga of King’s epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five years. The new stories delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

“You have to understand: To me, it was yesterday that I was standing on line at a Stephen King book signing, telling him that I was an aspiring writer, and he inscribed a copy of ‘Danse Macabre with ‘To Peter: Best of luck on your writing career.’ Since then I’ve had a great deal of luck, and this opportunity is—by me—one of the luckiest breaks of them all,” says David. “I’m extremely excited to be a part of such a highly anticipated project, and am looking forward to contributing however much I can to King’s epic fantasy. I just wish I could go back and tell the kid on the autograph line; he probably wouldn’t believe it.”

The series will be illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Jae Lee.

“We are thrilled to have Peter on-board to kick off this historic comic project. He is one of the most acclaimed comic book writers working today. The millions of Dark Tower fans are certainly in for a real treat,” said Joe Quesada, Marvel Entertainment’s Editor-In-Chief and Chief Creative Officer, Publishing

Peter David's career as a popular author spans nearly two decades. He has worked in a variety of entertainment media–television, film, books, short stories and comic books–and has acquired followings in all of them.

In the literary field, Peter has had over fifty novels published, including numerous appearances on the New York Times Bestsellers List. His novels include Sir Apropos of Nothing and the sequel The Woad to Wuin, Knight Life, Howling Mad, and the Psi-Man adventure series. He is the co-creator and author of the bestselling Star Trek: New Frontier series for Pocket Books, and has also written such Trek novels as Q-Squared, The Siege, Q-in-Law, Vendetta, I, Q (with John deLancie), A Rock and a Hard Place and Imzadi. He produced the three Babylon 5 Centauri Prime novels, and has also had his short fiction published in such collections as Shock Rock, Shock Rock II, and Otherwere: Stories of Transformation, as well as Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Peter's comic book resume includes an award-winning twelve-year run on The Incredible Hulk, and many fans consider David's work on The Incredible Hulk to be the definitive interpretation of the character. David’s other Marvel Comics work include runs on Wolverine, the New Universe series Merc and Justice, a run on the original X-Factor, the futuristic series Spider-Man 2099, about a man in the year 2099 who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man (the title character of which David co-created), and the 2000 and 2002 versions of Captain Marvel. He has also written comic book related novels, such as The Incredible Hulk: What Savage Beast, and co-edited The Ultimate Hulk short story collection. Furthermore, his opinion column But I Digress... has been running in The Comic Buyers's Guide for nearly a decade and was also collected into a trade paperback edition.

  • Very nice. Looking forward to reading it.
  • Panels from Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series were shown to an enthusiastic group of retailers during the conference. The full series name is "Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born" and the series will play a significant role in Marvel's new reader outreach programs. Fans worried about delays on this series shouldn't, as EiC Joe Quesada revealed Saturday during the Baltimore Comic-Con that series artist Jae Lee is already hard at work on the fifth issue of the series. The first issue ships February, 2007.
