King Doing A Comic Book DT for Marvel?

edited October 2005 in Dark Tower
I copied this over from Shocklines:

"STEPHEN KING WRITING HIS DARK TOWER FOR MARVEL?

It seems as if the widely rumored and speculated Stephen King/Marvel Comics collaboration may have some validity, though according to one source it may not be what comic book readers were expecting.

According to the UK-based website PN Online, King is slated to create a graphic novel for Marvel based on his Dark Tower series of books, illustrated by Jae Lee.

According to the website report…

”STEPHEN KING IS writing a graphic novel for Marvel Comics. Illustrated by Jae Lee, well-known American illustrator of comic books, it will form the eighth volume in King’s Dark Tower series, published by Simon & Schuster in the States and Hodder in the UK. Marvel is distributed worldwide by Diamond Book Distributors and publication is scheduled for next autumn.”

A representative for Marvel declined to comment on the report Wednesday afternoon.

The rumors first surfaced by Marvel’s own hand, when they released the “King” teaser image at last summer’s Comic-Con International: San Diego.

Marvel has also announced clarification of the "King" tease was around the corner. The "Next Week" section of their official "Marvel Pulse" newsletter released Wednesday reads:

"Look out, Mighty Marvelite, we've got an announcement that's going to rock the world of comics. We can't say too much yet. Let's just leave it at this: two words, King defined! Get The Scoop next week! PLUS the latest news from Marvel Games, Marvel Studios, and more!"

  • Nah, it's just a rumor. The moderator on the message board on King's official site clearly stated that King does not plan any Dark Tower 8! If the Marvel King-rumor is true at all, it'll be something completely different.
  • Publishers Weekly has this below today. However, the story isn't quite right. The official announcement should come tomorrow so I can't say more at the moment.

    Marvel to Pub Next King

In a move that can only continue to elevate the literary and commercial cachet of the graphic novel format, sources say that bestselling novelist Stephen King has agreed to write a new installment of his Dark Tower series as a graphic novel to be published in 2006.

A spokesperson for Marvel Comics, which will announce the deal on Friday, confirmed that they will publish a King work, although they didn't disclose details. Marvel was dropping hints about a possible King book at this year's Comic-con in July. Sources say that the new Dark Tower installment will be published first as a comic book periodical beginning in April and later released as a Marvel hardcover in the fall of 2006. The artist on the book will be veteran comics illustrator Jae Lee and the colorist is Richard Isanove, who won a recent Quill Award for his work on Marvel's 1602.

  • Oh WOW! :)

I really hope this happens...I'll buy the hardbacked version...so the story ain't over after all...
  • Bev knows and he's not talking! :(My bet is it will be an ancillary or side-story DT tale, if it is DT related.
  • Bingo!!!!;D

Marvel announces a new line! based on the Dark Tower series!

Images of the artwork can be seen at the link. Tres cool! 8)

From the artwork, it can be seen that Roland has all his fingers so the early issues must be pre-The Drawing of the Three and probably Gunslinger.

Have you seen any completed issues Bev?
  • If you read the Marvel announcement carefully, you'll see that the series will be of the young Roland:

"new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man"

New Comic Series Exploring the Origin of the Notorious Gunslinger Character Marks First Time Stephen King Has Produced Original Content for the Comic Book Format

Marvel Comics to Launch First Issue in April 2006

NEW YORK - World Fantasy Award-winning writer Stephen King, long acknowledged as the master of modern horror, and Marvel Comics join forces this spring to launch a ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower. The first issue is scheduled to debut in April 2006.

The comic series will mark the first time Stephen King has produced original content for an ongoing comic book project. The series will expand the saga of King's epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five years. King's unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga's mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

"As a lifelong fan of Marvel comic books, and as an adult reader who's seen comics "come of age" and take their rightful place in the world of fantasy and science fiction, I'm excited to be a part of Roland's new incarnation," said Stephen King.

The series will be illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Jae Lee.

King continued, "I love Jae Lee's work, and I think this is going to be a dynamite partnership. Frankly, I can't wait."

"Stephen King is a true literary master. We are thrilled beyond words to have him join Marvel on this exciting project. The millions of Dark Tower fans are in for a real treat, and I'm sure many more will soon be hooked on this epic series through this historic comic project," said Joe Quesada, Marvel Entertainment's Editor-In-Chief and Chief Creative Officer, Publishing.

"The level of excitement and talent that Stephen King brings to the world of comic books is electrifying. We're proud and honored to be a part of what promises to be an industry-defining event," said Dan Buckley, Publisher and Chief Operating Officer of Marvel Entertainment, Publishing.

Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, will be releasing the last three novels in the Dark Tower series (Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, and The Dark Tower) in 2006. Available in paperback from Scribner is a two-volume concordance to the novels compiled by Robin Furth, who is also contributing to the Marvel comic project. Two new Stephen King novels will be published by Scribner in 2006-CELL (with a protagonist who just happens to be a comic book artist) in January, and LISEY'S STORY in October. Having written over 40 novels, Stephen King is one of the most popular writers of all time, and is undoubtedly the world's leading horror writer. His books have been translated into 33 languages and published in over 35 countries. Currently, more than 300 million copies of his novels are in print.

  • The preview art looks gorgeous - Jae Lee has really captured the tone and feel that Whelan established in his paintings. I think this is going to be amazing. Woohoo! New Gunslinger stories!

    Blu
  • Bev, what information did you say that they had wrong? Will it actually appear in hardcover from Scribner and Hodder in the Fall as a collection of the series?

    -justin
  • The hardcover will come from Marvel, not Scribner or H&S. The first six issues will be collected in a single volume next Christmas.

This isn't DT8--it's selected episodes from Roland's early life.

Finally, wait to hear today from King's site with their statement about the project.
  • Wow, I can't wait for this. It'll be interesting to see what period of Roland's life these tales cover. Could be anything from Hax, to David, to Jericho Hill.

I'm glad they're doing a hardcover edition, too.

Call me crazy, but the pages they show on the announcement site look like the graphic equivalent of "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

I wonder if these pics are just promotional, or if the stories of Roland's youth are told in flashback ...

    HBJ,

not a big graphic novel fan, but I'll definitely sign up for this.

  • And here's Publishers Weekly's update:

As we reported yesterday, Marvel officially announced this morning that bestselling novelist Stephen King is creating a graphic novel based on his Dark Tower series that will be published by Marvel in 2006.

Marvel and S&S, King's trade book publisher, both emphasized that the graphic novel adaptation of the Dark Tower is not the next volume in the series. The new graphic novel is said to expand on the background of Roland Deschain, the gunslinger hero of the seven best-selling Dark Tower novels King has published over the course of 25 years. A six-issue comic book series will be released beginning in April 2006 that will be collected into a Marvel hardcover for the fall.

In a release King said he was a "lifelong fan" of Marvel Comics. "I’m excited to be a part of Roland’s new incarnation."
  • Man, the artwork looks fantastic :>
  • Promotional bookmark

  • I'm wondering: is the graphic novel of Roland's early adventures going to be released in hardback in the UK...like via Amazon? I really don't want to miss out on this and comics here are pretty much hit and miss as to getting all of a set.
  • An interview with Joe Quesada revealing many details about the project.
  • Read the interview, this just gets better and better :)

Maybe alot of DT loose ends tied up, left hanging in the book.

I want to find out what happened to Rhea of the Coos...
  • Very interesting. Good to hear that there could be potentially multiple stories covered.
  • That interview was fantastic. Thanks for providing all this information, Bev.

    HBJ,

    is it April yet?
  • Glad he seems excited. The talkback comments were funny to read. For the comic book fans this is a big whatever. :o
  • DTUK, Amazon.com ships worldwide, so you shouldn't have a problem ordering the issues and the hardcover collection from them.
