  • Five picks up more US dramas for digital debut

UK terrestrial Five has added NBC Universal's Conviction and Turner's Stephen King series Nightmares and Dreamscapes to the line-up of its digital channel Five US, launching on October 16.

The RTL Group-owned broadcaster has also acquired Foxtel/Austar relationship drama Love My Way and Warner Bros-produced The Ellen DeGeneres Show for its second new diginet, Five Life, launching the day before.

Five US will air daily from 16.00 to 01.00, building on its progenitor's ratings banker CSI, with the latest acquisitions coming on top of earlier drama pick-ups including 20th Century Fox Television's Shark and Vanished, and Warner-produced The Nine.

Five Life, meanwhile, will air between 06.00 and 23.00 each day. The channel will draw on its terrestrial sister's children's strand, Milkshake, in the morning, with Love My Way and The Ellen DeGeneres Show forming part of the daytime line-up. Supermodel Extra, a spin-off of Tiger Aspect's Make Me a Supermodel, will also feature.

The news comes a day after Five announced the appointment of ITV's former editor of daytime, Nick Thorogood, as controller of Five Life and Five US. He will report to Five's director of programmes Dan Chambers.

    • When the Levees Broke
  • As big a King fan as I am, the selection of The End of the Whole Mess and the series by the Guild is a big surprise to me.

The series as a whole was underwhelming with Battleground and Umney as the only real stand out episodes. The Fifth Quarter was pretty good as well. The rest... less so.
  • I really liked "End of the Whole Mess" and "Fifth Quarter." The only two episodes I didn't care for were "Autopsy Room Four" and "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band".
  • For me, The End of the Whole Mess is one of those stories that does not translate well from text to movie. A TV episode about people going senile does not make for compelling viewing.
  • Rebecca Gibney says King called (director) Mikael Salomon after seeing The End of the Whole Mess to tell him it was one of the best adaptations of any of his works that he'd ever seen.
  • Some NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES nomination updates from Lawrence Cohen:

  • Warner Home Video have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Stephen King’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes for 16th April 2007. In true King style, Nightmares & Dreamscapes explores alternative visions of what human existence could be like – at its worst. Toy soldiers avenge the death of their creator by attacking a hit man; an author of hard-boiled detective stories swaps places with one of his characters; two young newly-weds on their honeymoon get lost in a mysterious London neighbourhood; a man witnesses his own autopsy; and a couple end up in a place inhabited by dead rock ‘n’ roll legends – that’s the stuff Nightmares & Dreamscapes is made of.

    DVD feature include:
