Marvel to adapt The Stand

MARVEL TO ADAPT STEPHEN KING'S "THE STAND"

Ever since the first issue of "The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born" was released, the comics serialization of the popular Stephen King series illustrated by Jae Lee and adapted by Peter David, fans of King's have wondered if any other King novels might be serialized in comics form.

Last February at New York Comic-Con, King noted that he and Marvel were kicking around the idea of bringing "The Stand" to comics.

They're done kicking around the idea and are ready to move forward. In an interview with NPR's Talk of the Nation radio program last Wednesday promoting the release of the latest chapter of "The Dark Tower" to come to comics, "The Long Road Home," King confirmed what many fans have been hoping for.

"I did go to Marvel and ask them if they would have any interest in adapting 'The Stand' as a graphic novel and they are going to do that," King told Talk of the Nation. "Marvel is going to do 'The Stand' as a graphic novel."

A Marvel spokesperson simply offered "no comment" Sunday afternoon when asked for further details including creative teams, format and when this may see release.

Stephen King's apocalyptic novel "The Stand" first debuted in 1978. The opening of the novel detailed how society is destroyed when a biological weapon, a superflu virus, is released. The superflu nicknamed "Captain Trips" kills the majority of the world's population. As the novel progresses, the survivors in America find themselves strangely drawn to two destinations. A handful of seemingly good survivors head for Colorado and the home of a mysterious 108 year old black woman, while the seemingly sinister make their way to Las Vegas and join the society of the powerful and malevolent Randall Flagg. Eventually a series of events lead these two camps into an apocalyptic showdown.

In 1990 King rereleased the novel as "The Stand The Complete and Uncut" edition. In this edition, King further expanded the background and details of the novels setting by including text that was cut from the original edition for length. He also changed the setting of the novel from 1978 to 1990 and changed things that dated the previous version like pop culture references. The uncut version of "The Stand" was over 1,000 pages and also featured illustrations by legendary artist Bernie Wrightson.

King's epic novel was adapted in 1994 as a six-hour ABC mini-series featuring a script written by King and directed by Mick Garris. Gary Sinise played Stu Redman, one of the book's main protagonist, while Jamey Sheridan played Randal Flagg, the main villain.

"The Stand" is also a noteworthy novel for fans of Marvel Comics' adaptation of his "Dark Tower" series. After appearing in "The Stand," Flagg would go onto menace King's cast of characters in his 1986 novel the "Eyes of the Dragon" before appearing in "The Dark Tower" series as Roland Deschain's adversary Marten Broadcloak AKA Walter o'Dim.

  • Heh. Between this, the Dark Tower, and Joe Hill's - Locke & Key, I am going to be back into comic books in a big way.
  • I confess that I'm not terribly excited about this. I haven't been caught up by the graphic novel bug. Here is an interesting commentary about the news in the context of the previous adaptation of the novel.
  • Following the tremendous commercial and critical success of Marvel Comics’ adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower,” the storied publisher and venerable author have unsurprisingly opted to continue their relationship with another prose-to-comics translation of one of King’s beloved works -- perhaps even his most beloved work -- “The Stand.”

Scheduled for a September launch, Marvel’s “The Stand” will be scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, writer of such comics as “Angel: Revelations,” “Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four” and “Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing,” episodes of HBO’s “Big Love,” and plawright of such works as “Rough Magic” and “Dark Matters.”

Illustrating Marvel’s “The Stand” will be Mike Perkins, known for his work on “House of M: Avengers,” “Captain America” and “Union Jack: London Falling.” Laura Martin will provide color art.

An immense story detailing the struggle between good and evil, “The Stand” depicts a post-apocalyptic America where virtually the entire population has perished after the sudden release of a ferocious man-made plague. The relatively few survivors are split into two factions, each compelled by either the prophet-like Mother Abigail or the antichrist-like Randall Flagg to set out on a cross-country quest to find a new home and begin society anew. When the two groups discover the existence of each other, the stage is set for humanity’s last stand.

Marvel’s adaptation of “The Stand” is tentatively planned as six five-issue miniseries, or thirty issues in total, and is being produced under the guidance of Stephen King, who actually initiated the project himself. To learn more about the ambitious adaptation, CBR News spoke with editor Ralph Macchio.

  • This one I'll wait for the hard cover edition.
  • I'll probably get all of them, including the hardcover, if any. (Yes, sometimes I'm obsessive about collecting!)

  • I may change my mind come September, but I think I'm with Lou on this one. Since the adaptation is supposed to be completely faithful to the novel, without any new side-treks like there are in the DT graphic novels, I'm not terribly enthusiastic about this. I still haven't really caught the graphic novel bug.
  • From PW:

This fall, bestselling horror author Stephen King will again team with Marvel Comics to produce a new comics adaptation of one of his most popular novels, The Stand. Originally published in1978, The Stand is the story of a group of post-apocalyptic survivors trying to rebuild human society. Considered to be one of King’s most influential novels, The Stand has sold more than 4.5 million copies in the U.S.

Marvel Comics plans to publish a limited periodical comics series beginning this September that will eventually be collected into a book release. The new comics adaptation of The Stand will be based on The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition, an extended version of the prose novel published by Doubleday Broadway. The new comics work will be drawn by Captain America artist Mike Perkins and adapted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, a writer for other Marvel comics like The Fantastic Four as well as the HBO drama Big Love.

“There's nothing more interesting—and more fun—than seeing an old work take on new life” Stephen King said in a prepared statement. “I've enjoyed working with Marvel on The Gunslinger series, and am excited about this collaboration regarding The Stand.”

The announcement of this new project follows the release last year of the adaptation of King’s Dark Tower novels into several very successful prequel comics miniseries from Marvel. Both series, The Gunslinger Born and The Long Road Home, continue to sell well as both monthly periodical issues and trade book collections.

“Having the opportunity to visualize another Stephen King epic in the comic book format for both new and old readers is incredibly exhilarating,” Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said.

In recent years, Marvel, the home of well-known superheroes like Spider-Man and Iron Man, has aggressively sought out a number of bestselling prose writers, adapting their signature works into comics projects in an effort to bring new readers to the comic format. Besides King, other bestselling writers working on comics projects for Marvel include Laurell K. Hamilton and her Anita Blake vampire series, and Marvel recently announced a deal with noted sci-fi author Orson Scott Card to adapt his novel Ender’s Game.
