OLD TOWN -- Beginning July 11 thru the 17th, the River Coalition and the Old Town Public Library will be sponsoring Canoe Hullabaloo. Although there are many events that will take place of special interest to many people, one will be Old Town Canoe Company's attempt to break the world record of having the most canoes and kayaks in the Penobscot River forming the largest floating raft in the world. More than 778 canoes or kayaks need to be connected together by hands and held for over 30 seconds in order to break the Guinness World Book of Records. We urge everyone to come to the Old Town Airport with their canoes and kayaks on July 17 and participate. Registration fee is $5.00.

Also of major interest are the 25 specially designed 8-foot canoes which were donated by Old Town Canoe and decorated and/or painted by local artists including two "novel" canoes signed by Stephen King. All canoes will be raffled or auctioned off Saturday night (July 17th) beginning at 7:00 p.m. Use them as decorations in your camp, coffee tables, planters, or whatever you can but come up to the Old Town River Front Park on that Saturday and bid on them.

A huge silent auction will be held all day Saturday the 17th thanks to the many businesses and individuals who donated the many items to be auctioned.

All proceeds from all events will be given to the River Coalition which is a non-profit organization that focuses its time, talent, and funds for the benefit of all children and their families in the six river communities of Alton, Bradley, Greenbush, Indian Island, Milford and Old Town. Its purpose is to link resources, ideas, energy and experience to foster and support stronger, more caring communities.

For more information on the many other activities taking place during the full week you can check www.canoehullabaloo.com or contact Doris Seger at 827-2829 and have a program sent to you.

  • This looks so cool and it's for a good cause so I had to get a few raffle tickets for the DT canoe.

I have no idea where the h.e.l.l. I would put it if I won but the uniqueness of it won me over. ;D
  • King book jackets adorn raffle canoes

OLD TOWN - Word is spreading fast and people from all over the country have been calling to find out how they can take home an autographed Stephen King book jacket-decorated canoe, or two.The canoes were created as part of the first Canoe Hullabaloo Festival, which started on Sunday as a way to create fellowship among residents in communities along the Penobscot River near Old Town.

Cindy Seger of Milford, who is the children's librarian for the Old Town Public Library and a festival organizer, decorated the two canoes. One canoe features copies of cover art from earlier King books and the other features original cover art from his popular "Dark Tower" series.

King not only autographed both canoes, but his office also arranged for permission from the publishers to use the cover art, the artist said.

A total of 25 specially designed 8-foot canoes, donated by Old Town Canoe and Kayak, were decorated locally for the event. Each will be auctioned off on Saturday, July 17.

"We've had calls from out of state from people who are interested in King memorabilia," Seger said.

The River Coalition and Old Town Public Library joined forces in creating the weeklong festival, which also will feature live music, a children's carnival, food, road races, and a canoe regatta on July 17. Proceeds from the event will go to the River Coalition, which supports programs for children and residents in the communities of Old Town, Indian Island, Alton, Bradley, Greenbush and Milford.

"One of the reasons we did this is because we wanted people in the community to get together and have fun," said Valeri Osborn, organizer of the event. "Nowadays people are so busy they don't have time. The second priority was to do a fund-raiser event to help the River Coalition."

To make sure everyone has an opportunity to take home a King canoe, one of the two autographed canoes is being sold through a raffle.

"We wanted for everybody to feel like they had a chance to get one," Seger said.

The Dark Tower canoe has a waterlike blue background and features the first six original covers from the "Dark Tower" series. It is being raffled off for $5 a ticket, six for $25 or 25 for $100.

The second canoe, which has a black spider-web pattern with red spots over a tan, brown and red background, features copies of original cover art from earlier works of Maine's famous author.

Both canoes are considered as one-of-a-kind collector's items, according to the Bett's Bookstore Web site.

King canoe raffle tickets are available at the Old Town Public Library, at Hullabaloo events scheduled this week and at Bett's Bookstore on Hammond Street in Bangor.

The live auction of all 25 decorated canoes will begin at 7 p.m. July 17 at the Riverfront Park in Old Town and is the finale of the weeklong celebration.

For information, call the library at 827-3972 or check out the Canoe Hullabaloo Web site at www.canoehullabaloo.com.
  • Old Town canoe festival a success

OLD TOWN - The town's recent Canoe Hullabaloo festival was a success, raising between $16,000 and $18,000 from Saturday's canoe and silent auction, according to its planners.Organized by the Old Town Public Library and the River Coalition, Canoe Hullabaloo was designed to celebrate the heritage and people from the Penobscot River communities of Old Town, Alton, Bradley, Greenbush, Indian Island and Milford. Concentrated at Riverfront Park in Old Town, the weeklong festival featured canoe races, evening concerts in the park, a 5K road race, a craft fair and food.

"We really accomplished what we wanted to," Shawn Yardley of the River Coalition said Monday. "We brought the community together."

One of the festival's main events was a canoe auction, in which 8-foot canoes donated by Old Town Canoe and decorated by local artists were auctioned off. One of the most sought-after canoes was decorated with Stephen King book jackets and signed by the author.

The collectible item was sold to Old Town resident Tom Thornton for $2,100.

Final dollar amounts for the entire weeklong event have not yet been calculated. The money raised from the festival will go to the River Coalition, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support children and their families in the six Penobscot River towns.

"We had good attendance almost every night" for the evening concerts, Old Town librarian and festival organizer Valerie Osborne said. "Thursday night was a little slow, but part of it was the weather."

Planners also were disappointed at the turnout at Saturday morning's regatta, an attempt to break the world record for the most canoes or kayaks connected together by hands and held for more than 30 seconds. They needed 778 canoes or kayaks in order to break the record and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.

"We were a little disappointed on the regatta, and I think part of that was because people didn't participate in the numbers that we thought," Osborne said, noting that slightly more than 300 canoes and kayaks attended the event.

Organizers were pleased over all and already are starting to think about next year's festival. The group had planned to take some time off, but it doesn't appear as if that's going to happen.

"We're actually meeting a week from Monday to start planning for next year," Yardley said.

The committee plans next year to do more promotion of certain events, such as the professional canoe and 5K road race. Osborne said she anticipates that with a little more promotion, these events will double in size by next year.

"I think for a first year it was pretty successful," Osborne said.
