OLD TOWN - The town's recent Canoe Hullabaloo festival was a success, raising between $16,000 and $18,000 from Saturday's canoe and silent auction, according to its planners.Organized by the Old Town Public Library and the River Coalition, Canoe Hullabaloo was designed to celebrate the heritage and people from the Penobscot River communities of Old Town, Alton, Bradley, Greenbush, Indian Island and Milford. Concentrated at Riverfront Park in Old Town, the weeklong festival featured canoe races, evening concerts in the park, a 5K road race, a craft fair and food.
"We really accomplished what we wanted to," Shawn Yardley of the River Coalition said Monday. "We brought the community together."
One of the festival's main events was a canoe auction, in which 8-foot canoes donated by Old Town Canoe and decorated by local artists were auctioned off. One of the most sought-after canoes was decorated with Stephen King book jackets and signed by the author.
The collectible item was sold to Old Town resident Tom Thornton for $2,100.
Final dollar amounts for the entire weeklong event have not yet been calculated. The money raised from the festival will go to the River Coalition, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support children and their families in the six Penobscot River towns.
"We had good attendance almost every night" for the evening concerts, Old Town librarian and festival organizer Valerie Osborne said. "Thursday night was a little slow, but part of it was the weather."
Planners also were disappointed at the turnout at Saturday morning's regatta, an attempt to break the world record for the most canoes or kayaks connected together by hands and held for more than 30 seconds. They needed 778 canoes or kayaks in order to break the record and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.
"We were a little disappointed on the regatta, and I think part of that was because people didn't participate in the numbers that we thought," Osborne said, noting that slightly more than 300 canoes and kayaks attended the event.
Organizers were pleased over all and already are starting to think about next year's festival. The group had planned to take some time off, but it doesn't appear as if that's going to happen.
"We're actually meeting a week from Monday to start planning for next year," Yardley said.
The committee plans next year to do more promotion of certain events, such as the professional canoe and 5K road race. Osborne said she anticipates that with a little more promotion, these events will double in size by next year.
"I think for a first year it was pretty successful," Osborne said.
