  • 30 book issue, very interesting. First mention of a definite number beyond the original 7 installments that I have heard of.
  • Robin Furth said that in March.
  • Missed that or forgot. Probably the latter...
  • DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER BORN #1 (of 7)

    COVER BY: JAE LEE

    WRITER: ROBIN FURTH

    PETER DAVID

    PENCILS: JAE LEE

    COLORED BY: RICHARD ISANOVE

    LETTERED BY: CHRIS ELIOPOULOS

    THE STORY:

“The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” With those words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King’s Roland—an implacable gunslinger in search of the enigmatic Dark Tower, powering his way through a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic. Now, in a comic book personally overseen by King himself, Roland’s past is revealed! Sumptuously drawn by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove, adapted by long-time Stephen King expert Robin Furth (author of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: A Concordance) and scripted by New York Times Best-seller Peter David, this series delves deep into Roland’s origins—the perfect introduction to this incredibly realized world, while long-time fans will thrill to adventures merely hinted at in the novels. Be there for the very beginning of a modern classic of fantasy literature!

  • So none of the comic books are written by King at all? How much involvement does he have regarding this project?
  • He created the stories. Robin Furth wrote them based on his recounting of the events. She's his research assistant, so she had ready access to him.
  • I don't know much about comics, can anybody suggest which of the FOUR versions I should go for?

The non-descript one (See http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=5952, please.), the Book Market edition (See http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=5955, please.), the Jae Lee Sketch Variant (See http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=6044, please.), or the Joe Quesada Variant (See http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=6045, please.)?
  • It's all rather confusing, isn't it? I don't know the answer to your question. We have a new comic shop opened up just a few miles from where I live, so I plan to make a visit soon and try to get this all sorted out for myself. It might be like TV Guide special issues where the entire cast of LOST appears individually on different covers. I expect the interior contents are the same in all of them. I could be wrong--I haven't purchased a comic book, excuse me-a graphic novel, in a long, long time.
  • So, I went right to the source, and passed your query on to Jae Lee. Here's what he told me:

This one is all you need to enjoy the story. The others are for completists. The interiors are the same. (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=5952 )

I have no idea what the book market edition is.

Variant editions typically go for more money because of their limited quantities. For example, if a retailer orders 100 copies of the regular edition, Marvel will give the retailer a copy of the sketch variant. It's a rare item that the retailer can sell for a higher amount. It's an incentive to order more copies. Of course the price depends on how rare these editions are. If variant editions are shipped in equal quantities, then the price remains the same.

Basically, I'd suggest getting the cover that appeals to you most. The insides are all the same.

    Yes, indeed it is!

Mmh ... "LOST" ... *drools in anticipation* :o

Neither have I - at least not one from the US.

    Wow, thanx a lot! :D

His reply was very helpful to me. I'll wait for scans of the different covers to be posted somewhere on the web but I think I'll go for the plain regular edition the way I go for Mass Market Paperbacks. 8-)
