  • I can't wait ;D
  • Here's an Australian profile of the Stanley.
  • Netflix is hosting a special screening of The Shining at the Stanley Hotel next week.
  • People from all over the Front Range corridor spread out their blankets and set up their camp chairs on the front lawn at The Stanley Hotel on Wednesday night to watch a special screening of “The Shining.”

“It was wonderful,” said Scott Holm, director of marketing at the Estes Park landmark. “We guesstimate that about 1000 people showed up for the event. We’re thinking about having it again next year or investigating the option of buying our own screen and doing it through the summer months.”

The event was part of the Netflix Rolling Roadshow, a traveling “drive- in” movie theatre experience that screens movies in the places that made them famous.

The event was hosted by singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb, a self-proclaimed movie buff and pop culture aficionado.

“I’m such a huge movie fan,” said Loeb. “It’s something I do when I go out with friends or on dates…even when I’m with my family, we always go see movies or rent movies. It’s a good way to gather together. It’s a fun time to be together with other people. These are all sort of ‘cult classic’ films. To sit and watch them with a huge group of people is fun because you get to hear them all gasp at the same time. Even if you’ve seen it a thousand times, there are still things that shock you when you see it. If you haven’t seen the movie before, this is a great way to see it for the first time: on the big screen with a big group of people.”

Prior to the screening an eight-minute horror writing competition was held, where 13 contestants crafted a story based on four elements provided by the audience. The winner walked away with a check for $1000 and a boxed set of Stephen King novels, and all participants received a year’s free subscription to Netflix.

“It went really well,” said Holm. “We didn’t have any of the troubles that we thought we were going to have as far as any of the hotel guests being disturbed or any drunk and disorderlies. There were some parking issues, with people parking their cars on private property. There was a little garbage at the end of the night, but all we had to do was pick up the bags that the crew had filled. I heard that at the “Field of Dreams” screening, 5000 people showed up for the film. I don’t think we could have handled that, but as it was, we were just fine and they were a pleasure to work with. I hope that we can continue to do this kind of thing, offer these kinds of events to the community and the Front Range, and bridge what I feel is a perceived gap between the hotel and the community.”

The Roadshow is sponsored by Netflix, but is the brainchild of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema of Austin, Texas, an independently owned and operated movie theatre that sponsors all kinds of nifty events aside from taking films across the country. The theatre offers dinner, drinks, “open movie nights” where patrons bring their own films and watch them on a big screen, “Weird Wednesday” nights where they screen obscure films, sing-along screenings of musicals or full-length concert footage and “Foleyvision” events where the theatre shows kung fu films with sound effects and dialogue provided by a group of Foley artists.

Wednesday night’s screening of “The Shining” brought viewers from as far away as Chicago and California and several moviegoers were traveling around with the Roadshow for the month of August.

“We just really had a great time,” said Holm. “We’d love to do it again next year and continue to offer this kind of entertainment to the community.”
  • The Rolling Roadshow tour is back. They did a screening of Kubrick's Shining up at the Stanley Hotel last year, and this year they are doing a screening of Stand By Me in Brownsville, Oregon. They have a whole day full of events planned, there will be a "Find The Body" scavenger hunt, and a blueberry pie eating contest prior to the screening.
