Annie Wilkes is alive and well
Woman Claims She Inspired Stephen King's 'Misery'
Stephen King is the master of the macabre, and he often writes about scary women. One of his scariest was "Annie Wilkes", the unforgettable sadistic nurse played by Kathy Bates in the 1990 movie, "Misery." Now in a federal lawsuit obtained by "CJ" {celebrity justice}, a freelance writer from New Jersey claims she's the real Annie.
In the lawsuit, Anne Hiltner claims "Psycho Nurse Wilkes" is a caricature based on her, and she accuses King of "invasion of privacy."
Hiltner makes a similar claim about another Stephen King character from the TV mini-series "Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital," which aired last year on ABC. In the lawsuit, Hiltner claims a key character, "psychic Sally Druse," was also based on her. Hiltner claims that character "defames" her and exploits "private events" in her real life -- but the rambling lawsuit gives no details of those events.
Anne Hiltner is no stranger to Stephen King. She has sued him before. King's lawyer tells "CJ" she once claimed King's book "Riding the Bullet" was plagiarized from her brother's manuscript. She lost that lawsuit. Even before that, in the early 1990's, she reportedly claimed in another lawsuit that "Misery" was plagiarized from her writings. That lawsuit was dismissed.
Seems like she's still causing the best-selling author "Misery."
