The Journey into Writing Contest

The Journey into Writing Contest will name its three Young Writers of the Year at a luncheon ceremony in Hallowell on Thursday.



The winners will be chosen from 420 entries in the statewide writing contest for high school juniors and home-schooled students of comparable age.



Gov. John Baldacci and authors Stephen King, Tabitha King and Richard Russo will announce the winners. Winners will receive $2,500 and their names and winning entries will be published in the Maine Sunday Telegram on May 29.



The trio will come from 13 semifinalists who have already been selected. Semifinalists receive $100 and a plaque. Their winning entries have been published on MaineToday.com in the 20 Below section, and on the contest Web site, www.mccs.me.edu.



The semifinalists are Lucas Delahanty of Cape Elizabeth High School, Alanna Dick of Winthrop High School, Tyler Francke of Presque Isle High School, Matthew Gleason of Freeport High School, Isla Hansen of Lewiston High School, Kelly Hassapelis of Searsport District High School, Bethany Ingraham of Richmond High School, Amanda Osborne of Brewer High School, Juliana Partridge of Catherine McAuley High School, Matt Powers of North Yarmouth Academy, Margareta Roth of Thornton Academy, Erik Tasker of Deering High School and Moira Yoe of North Yarmouth Academy.



The Journey into Writing Contest is run by the Maine Community College System with sponsorship from the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, MaineToday.com, Central Maine Power Co. and U.S. Cellular.



Applicants submitted entries of up to 1,500 words. Entries could be short stories, essays or poems. Semifinalists were selected by a review committee from the Maine Community College System.



The three Young Writers of the Year will be chosen by the Kings and Russo.
