  • King's commencement speech will air on C-SPAN on Saturday.

Monmouth College's 2005 commencement address will be broadcast nationally June 25 on C-SPAN, as part of the public affairs network's "American Perspectives" series.

Delivering the May 15 address was 1969 MC graduate Dwight Tierney, a senior executive vice president for Viacom Inc., in charge of its overseas operations. In 1981, Tierney was a member of the team that launched MTV (Music Television).

Tierney's speech is scheduled to air at 9:15 p.m. CDT. It will be repeated at 12:15 a.m.

The program, which begins at 7 p.m., will also include addresses by actor Tom Hanks (Vassar), author Stephen King (University of Maine) and author Tom Wolfe (Washington & Lee). Other featured speakers will be Judith McHale, president of Discovery Communications (American University), Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (Seton Hall) and Lonnie Bunch, director of the Smithsonian Institution's African American University (Lake Forest College).

Tierney, who spoke before 220 graduating seniors and their families on the Wallace Hall Plaza, was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. In his address, he told how Monmouth College taught him to be responsible, but also to take risks.

C-SPAN, the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, is available on DIRECTV channel 350 and DISH Network channel 210, and is also carried by most local cable affiliates.
