  • Bev - Any idea if this is "Lisey and the Madman"?
  • OK, I'm not Bev, but I do know the answer to this one:)

Nope, it's probably from unpublished older novels like The Aftermath, Blaze, Sword in the Darkness, and the like.
  • I think it will probably be Lisey since the title is "New" Beginnings and not "Old" Beginnings.
  • Writers will add chapter to aid efforts

    DAVID ROBINSON

    BOOKS EDITOR

JM COETZEE, the South African author who has won both the Booker and Nobel prizes, is one of the world’s leading writers who will be contributing to a new anthology to raise money for tsunami-hit countries.

He joins at least 13 others, including fellow Booker Prize winners Ian McEwan and Margaret Atwood, in New Beginnings, which will be published by Bloomsbury on World Book Day (3 March).

The book will consist of the first chapters of the next books from some of the most popular and acclaimed writers in the English language. From the United States, Stephen King and Scott Turow will offer a taste of books which are not yet on the schedule of their publisher.

From Britain, Mark Haddon, author of the best-selling Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, will offer a sneak peek at Blood and Scissors, his black adult comedy which is not due to be published until 2006.

New Beginnings will also be the first opportunity to look at Nick Hornby’s A Long Way Down, his first novel for five years; the latest novel by Nicholas (The Horse Whisperer) Evans; and an as yet untitled piece by Tracey Chevalier.

Alexander McCall Smith, the only Scot on the list, has contributed the opening chapter from Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, the second in his series about Edinburgh moral philosopher Isabel Dalhousie.

"I’m very impressed with this project, and certainly by the speed with which it has been implemented," said McCall Smith last night.

"And from the authors’ point of view, it is also good to let the public know what direction their work is taking."

Maeve Binchy, Marian Keyes, Paulo Coelho and Vikram Seth complete the provisional line-up.

All proceeds from the book, which will be priced £5, will go to charities working in the 12 countries ravaged by the Boxing Day tsunami.
  • Thankee-sai, Bev, for the clearing up. Didn't King try to write a novel before Lisey's Story? A novel that he gave up on? It would be cool if New Beginnings contained something about King that most people didn't know.
  • Do we know if the excerpt appearing in this is the same as appeared in McSweeney's recently?

    Blu
  • We don't know one way or t'other at present. I'm hoping that it will be different, but don't know at present.

Peter: King did say that he had at least one novel go bust after finishing DT7. I can't imagine him wanting to publish anything from that, though.
  • Bloomsbury will publish this book simultaneously in the UK, US and Germany.
  • Bev, have you ever heard of a title or plot about the busted novel?
  • No. King just mentioned the fact that he'd abandoned it on a Today Show interview while promoting DT7.
  • Thankee-sai.
  • Thanks for the info... I just went to Badmoon Books & placed my order. It's been awhile since I bought anything new by SK - it will be great to see it when it arrives!! ;D
  • Vancouver-based Raincoast Books is joining the U.K.'s Bloomsbury Publishing to produce a star-studded collection of writing that will benefit tsunami relief efforts.

Margaret Atwood, J.M. Coetzee, Ian McEwan, Maeve Binchy, Mark Haddon, Stephen King, Nick Hornby, Scott Turow and Helen Fielding are among the authors who will contribute to the project.

The "unique publishing venture" will collect material from the participants' forthcoming works and publish the entries in a single volume, entitled New Beginnings.

"It is my hope that our Canadian retail partners and the Canadian public will get behind the project and make it a tremendous success," Raincoast CEO Allan MacDougall said in a statement Tuesday.

Though it is still working out the details of Canada's participation in the international project, Raincoast plans to release a paperback version, at a cost of $12.95, across Canada on March 3, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross.

(PRWEB) January 19, 2005 -- Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and Raincoast Books announced today plans for a unique publishing venture to aid in the effort of Tsunami Disaster Relief.

In an unprecedented publishing move, the world’s leading writers, including Canada’s own Margaret Atwood, are coming together to publish material from their forthcoming works in a single volume entitled New Beginnings (Raincoast Books, March 3, 2005, 1-55192-855-8, $12.95, pb). All proceeds raised in Canada from this unique venture will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

    Paulo Coelho

    Tracy Chevalier

    Helen Fielding

Jonny Geller, the Project Director (and Managing Director of the book division of Curtis Brown Agency), approached Nigel Newton, CEO of Bloomsbury with the idea and Newton agreed on the spot to devote the resources of their entire publishing arm to this global publication.

Raincoast immediately seized the opportunity to join the venture and are in the process of working out the final details of Canadian participation with their international partners.

Allan MacDougall, CEO of Raincoast, says that being involved in such a venture speaks to the very best instincts of the publishing community. "Jonny Geller, Bloomsbury Books and of all these authors are being true global citizens, how could we not also? It is my hope that our Canadian retail partners and the Canadian public will get behind the book project and make it a tremendous success."

Bloomsbury’s US, UK and German divisions along with Raincoast Books will be publishing the book simultaneously on World Book Day (March 3rd). All proceeds raised by Bloomsbury will go the Disasters Emergency Committee fund and it is hoped millions of dollars will be raised worldwide. Canadian proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

Jonny Geller: "I hope New Beginnings will be a must-buy for any book-lover. To glimpse the opening chapter of your favourite author’s new work before it is published will be an unprecedented experience for their fans. These incredibly generous authors showcase what is great in modern writing today. There should be something for everybody in this collection.

"By spending only $12.95 you will have a great book by the world’s favourite authors, participate in a dynamic global publishing event and give real aid to people rebuilding their lives thousands of miles away."

Nigel Newton: "The Tsunami has devastated so many lives and by publishing this book we hope that a significant amount of money will be raised by the book trade to help bring about reconstruction of the lives of those in the twelve countries affected by the disaster.

"Our goal will be to get as close to 100% of the cover price of the book going through intact to the Disasters Emergency Committee fund. We will not be offering discount on the title to increase its fund-raising potential but we will be offering full returns rights for credit to enable customers to get behind the launch. I would like to thank all the authors who have already donated their writing to this cause. I know that the trade will support this book to the best of their ability – they have responded with such generosity in the past."
