Neglected Quote from DTVII
Hi guys, utter newbie to the board, though I'm now versed in The Road.
As I read DTVII (the day it came out, of course) I found a quote that right from the get-go seemed utterly important. I've yet to see anyone mention it and I was wondering your opinion on it.
Warning: Spoilers Leading Up To And Through The Ending
Page 310, Roland offering Jake a smoke:
Roland smiled. "A man who can't bear to share his habits is a man who needs to quit them."
Shortly after finishing the book, I wrote out a bit of an essay including that piece of dialogue. Unfortunately, I'm unable to find it and, truth to tell, I can't even connect the dots to it's greater meaning in the series now. I've apparently lost the point lol.
Regardless, I think Roland's fate, and the fate of the Ka-Tet was tied to this exact belief. Roland's next go-around may include the horn, but that doesn't matter. It's not who you call, it's why. If Roland can't walk away from the Tower, I don't think he can ever win it.
Did the quote stand out to anyone else, and, if so, your thoughts?
