Kent filmmaker is disappointed with Sundance

edited December 2004 in General news
James Renner's `All That You Love' fails to make shorts cut

Kent filmmaker James Renner still feels his $1 investment to purchase the rights to Stephen King's All That You Love Will Be Carried Away will pay a dividend, even if the film wasn't selected as an entry in the shorts category for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, next month.

Renner shot his short, which tells the story of a traveling salesman at the end of his road, at various locations in Northeast Ohio, including the Kent area.

``It's a little upsetting,'' Renner said. ``I'm still proud of the film.''

But he couldn't hide his disappointment. Having volunteered at Sundance, he has seen shorts that he considered questionable in quality that were still screened. He wondered whether his film's length (about 26 minutes) worked against him. He remains resolute, however. He plans to enter All That You Love Will Be Carried Away in other festivals, including the Slamdance Film Festival, which runs at roughly the same time in the same city as Sundance.

``I'll get it played somewhere,'' he said.

  • Wow. You guys are quick! That just came out today. George Thomas, the reporter for the Beacon, is a friend of mine and I was probably too honest with him. I still love Sundance and give it major props. I'm just a little sore at not getting in. I mean c'mon...Joe Bob Briggs, Harvey Pekar, Stephen King...what more could you ask for?

At 26 minutes in length, it's a monster of a short, though. But, it does rock like Boston. Hopefully, we'll have it on stephenkingshortmovies down the road a little bit. I'm trying to keep it on the DL until we get into a major fest, though And, there are plenty more to submit to.

Really, Joe Bob is wonderful in the part of Alfie Zimmer. I can't wait for people to see his performance. And Harvey as the hotel clerk is just perfect. Thanks for the interest. We'll keep you posted on the 2nd Annual Dollar Baby Film Fest in 2005!

The latest issue of Cleveland Magazine names Scene staff writer James Renner as one of the city's 30 most interesting people.

This was especially surprising to his colleagues, since Renner recently came in 48th in a vote for the 50 most interesting people in our office.

The distinction puts Renner in the elite company of a NASA engineer and some eight-year-old kid who cured cancer.

What makes Renner so special? He once met Stephen King. Take that, cancer kid!

Renner celebrated making the list by shrugging his shoulders and trying to bum a cig. ;D
