For Bev

edited September 2004 in General news
Hi Bev,

I was wondering if you know of a King-story titled "The Machinenist"? It has been claimed that a story with that title exist.

Also, do you know something about an aborted film project titled "Training Exercise"? It's apparently a story treatment King once did which dealt with Marines. Was this King delving into war-territory and do you know why the project has stayed unproduced?

Just curious...

  • This sounds like something that might be addressed in "STEPHEN KING: UNCOLLECTED, UNPUBLISHED"

by Rocky Wood with David Rawsthorne & Norma Blackburn, coming later this year from Cemetery Dance.

No story called The Machinist has ever been published. I've heard rumors about Training Exercise, but as to why it is unproduced, well, I'd respond to ask: Why has The Talisman never been produced (optioned 20 years ago)? Or Bag of Bones, etc. etc.

    That's Hollywood!
  • Thanks, Bev.

Do you happen to know a bit more about Training Exercise? I know someone associated with Dino de Laurentiis wrote the script after King's treatment. I haven't read or heard King talk about it.

The upcoming book that you mentioned is being published by CD, is it not? Do you know if a less-rich Danish guy like me can purchase it some way, as that's one book I surely must own?
  • Amazon very often sells CD books at a discount. The Road to the Dark Tower, for example, has been listed at $20 off the $75 cover price. CD also often has specials where they offer coupon or % discounts--subscribe to their newsletters.

If King wrote only the treatment, then that's nothing much to get excited about. A treatment is basically a synopsis for something that doesn't exist yet, a glorified outline. Could be as short as four or five pages.
  • Thanks again, Bev. Yeah, maybe I should subscribe to CD.

Oh, and I'm also anxious to your Road to the Dark Tower.

King supposedly also wrote the treatments/outlines/scenarios to the stories in Creepshow 2 (except "The Raft"). I have a copy of the script, written by George Romero (and much better than the filmed version), and instead of "The Hitchhiker" it has "Cat from Hell." It also had "Pinfall" which was never filmed at all!

But according to some books about King, "Old Chief Wood'nhead," "Pinfall," "The Hitchhiker," and the wrap-around story was based on these outlines/ideas/whatever by King.

I guess Romero then fleshed them out, and he did it great.

Now, why am I so interested in this, you might think? As a King-fan, I'm, interested in everything!!!
