Response from Moderator:

No, he doesn’t hate the Yankees fans.

Being a major NY Yankee (Bronx Bomber) fan this makes me feel better! ;D

  • Being a total 'duh' on things concerning baseball (where I come from the sports not all that 'in', but I'm trying to catch up though) 'Head Down' still manages to catch my attention and entertain me to no end. It has gone so far to convince me SK and baseball can do no wrong. I just can't wait for 'Faithful'.
  • Pardon me, but which are the top baseball teams in America now? Do they change a lot from season to season?
  • Sunny,

    Here are the current standings:

Basically, it seems that the two best teams at the moment are St. Louis and the NY Yanks. It does change from year to year, but not a whole lot (which is one of the reasons I am not a huge baseball fan).
  • New,

Yep, I read about the stadium proposal a week ago. Personally, I think that Yankee Stadium should be left as is - its a tradition in The Bronx!
  • Tradition is great, but the only way I can see the stadium staying where it is is if they decide that is the best place to make money. :)

That sentence is very awkwardly written, but I don't really have the time to fix it right now.

    Thanks New!

Seems like SK's favorite team is not doing too bad as well.

But is there a difference between the American League and the National League??

And the way they calculated the standings is also turning my head around ;D
  • The Red Sox are slowly self destructing!  9.5 games down in the division and 1.5 down in the wild card race.  Not sure what the end result will be of trading away Nomar Garciaparra - Guess the headlines in Boston should have read:

    Nomar - Nomore  ;D

Will be interesting to see O'Nan's and King's opinion on the mid season trade in their upcoming book!
  • Personally, I think that the trade of Nomar was a good move. He has been having issues all year (since they talked about trading him in the offseason) and has not been that productive. They got a lot in return. Coupled with the fact that the Yanks didn't get Johnson is good for the Sox (though they certainly still won't catch the Yanks for the divison, they still have a shot at the wildcard). At least, that is the opinion of a man who is neither a Yankee or Red Sox fan.

Sunny, to answer your question, there is a different between the American and National Leagues. They have a slightly different rule, in that in the AL they use a designated hitter (the pitcher doesn't bat) and the NL doesn't. Also, it used to be that the AL and NL teams would never play each other during the season and they would only meet in the world series. A few years back, however, they added some games between they leagues in the regular season. Personally, I don't think that they should have added them and I don't like the designated hitter rule. I think it takes away a lot of the strategy that I like in the game. I follow the NL teams more than the AL teams. That all being said, there are other sports that I follow more than baseball.
  • I was surprised to see Garciaparra go to the Cubbies, but more surprised to see Alex Gonzales go to the Expos. My son thought I'd be very happy since I think Alex is a cutie-pie. I can see all the guys right now going ::) -- this is a SPORTS discussion, Lin -- but when did that ever stop me? I rest my case.

sunny, I see new has given you an excellent recap of the differences between the National League and the American League teams... I don't like the DH rule either. sunny, in the National League where they don't implement the DH rule, they CAN send in a "pinch" hitter for the pitcher, but then cannot bring him back into the game. Kind of a double-edged sword, but useful if the pitcher is ready to come out I guess.

    Lin
  • Gotta take some time to digest this you guys and gals ;D

Not to mention looking up the net for other infos concerning baseball ;)

But thanks a lot for all the help and explanation you've given me, especially New and Lin. Trust me, I will succeed in catching up with all of you ;D

That all being said, there are other sports that I follow more than baseball.

And what are those New? Dodgeball? ;D
  • I have it on good authority from previous discussion that new is a hockey fan. :) I can't speak for any other sports he likes. Dodgeball was never mentioned. :P I am a big hockey fan too, there are a few around here. I cheer for my hometown Ottawa Senators. I also LOVE the NFL and am waiting patiently for the new season to start in September.

    ;D Heh heh

    Figures.
  • Dodgeball can be very dangerous!

Back in the day when my boys were Cub Scouts we always planned an overnighter (we called it a lockin) at the local rec center and the kids always stayed up all night long.  We always ended up with a  massive dodgeball game of adults against the kids.  Seems unfair right - yep it is - those kids a ruthless.   :o

Picture this.  50 or 60 kids on one side of the gym and 5 adults on the other side.  Logistically, the adults had no choice but to lose.  Course if'n you were fast you could stay in the game to the bitter end but then you'd be too tired to compete in the next round!  :o
  • A horror sports story ;D
