    31.  Scary Stories -- 2019

This was a documentary about author Alvin Schwartz's childrens series of books, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

This sort of broke my heart and I cried.  It was about censorship and messing with creative content.  It just hurt my heart.

Making the banned book list and challenged in libraries and schools, the series was fought for and against.

Apparently Mr. Schwartz did a ton of reasearch on these stories that are folk tales from all around the world.  And there was so many human lessons to be taught hiding in the scares.
Illustrator Stephen Gammell had some absolutely gorgeous art in the original books and they were probably the one thing that got the books banned.  Very graphic art.

Now, do I think a parent has the final say for their child?  Yes.  But, they do not have the final say for my child.  You have no right to tell me how I am to raise my kid.  So, this banning, and white washing and changing creative content just irks the holy sh*t out of me.  We all know ourselves, our homes, our children.  Some children are not mature enough for some topics.  They may not be emotionally, chronologially, spiritually, mentally mature enough for some things, and you have every right to protect your child.  Say no to these things for YOUR CHILD.  NOT MINE.

The publisher re-released these books at some point with new illustrations from a different illustrator and there was a huge uproar -- GOOD!

Is there crap out there for all ages?  Yes.  There is stuff I find offensive and disgusting and stupid.  Stupid sh*t is more offensive to me than some headless ghoul drawing.

But, guess what?  I make choices for myself.  Not you.  And not your kids or family.  If you want to read or watch or listen to stuff that I find totally worthless -- more power to you.

I think it said in 2017 the publisher once again re-released the series with the original artwork restored.

Hmm. This is interesting to me. My Ty has a couple of these Scary Stories books....and they were bought at school book fairs or thru the Scholastic book flyers!! I had no idea of their colorful past.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said.
Check and see if his books have the original artwork with Stephen Gammell.  Originals with his artwork were selling close to 2000 bucks.

The thing I had the hardest time with (because Flakes prepared me for the goat explosion) was the vomiting of ghost jizz.  That was just awful.  I am a sympathetic puker and I just had to look away every single time he did that!  I really liked the lead girl.

    Really fun story.

This series was difficult.  I had episodes and moments, characters and creatures that I enjoyed, and then there were times I struggled to stay focused.  As I've said, to watch man's inhumanity to man is difficult for me, especially when it is a historical fact and is still happening.  I was anxious and uneasy much of the time.

Directed by Oliver Stone (and a cameo as a homeless guy), I LOVE The Hand.  Starring my favorite actor, Michael Caine, I am the only person I know who loves this movie.  Everyone else just trashes it.

But, I've said this in the past Halloween marathons -- Michael Caine gives his performance 110%!  He commits.  And I think he does a terrific job.  Also, as I've said marathon after marathon, Michael says this is one of his worst movies, BUT, he did it because he is an actor, and he needed a new garage built onto his house.  So, he took it and not for one second do you think he is phoning this in. He doesn't treat it as some horrible B flick job.    His performance is amazing, believable and frightening.

  • 36.  The Exorcist -- 1973

I saw this in theaters when it first came out.  When Regan walked into the dinner party and peed on the floor, I knew this was a very different movie than I had ever seen. When you see someone near your age peeing on the floor in front of a room full of people, it is unsettling.  One of your own kind has lost control.  Could this happen to me?

It held up for me after all these years and so many horror movies under my belt.  Linda Blair did her best work as the Demon.  I guess she broke her back in the scene where she whips back and forth, like Willow Smith whipped her hair back and forth.  And, that contributed to her drug addictions that have plagued her.

One of the most amazing soundtracks ever created, it was worth my time to revisit.

    22. Dream Demon (FTV)

The anxieties of a young bride-to-be are making her dreams spill into real life...or is it the other way around?

This underseen 1988 British psychological horror film is often (and incorrectly, in my opinion) described as a ripoff of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it's far more nuanced and well, British.  That's not to say that it falls short in any way as a horror film--the opening sequence was so horrifyingly and shockingly gruesome, I involuntarily broke into a short bout of lone applause.  Is that weird?

Actress Jemma Redgrave makes her film debut and gives a good performance as the frightened fiance in what feels at times like a Polanski horror film (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby).  Look for a young Timothy Spall (Harry Potter's Wormtail) hamming it up in a repulsive role as the paparazzo from hell.  If you like creepy dream sequences, there's plenty to enjoy here, and you're kept guessing as to what's a dream and what's reality--sometimes to a fatiguing degree.  Things are a bit muddled at times, and an odd casting choice for some flashbacks involve what's clearly an adult actress playing the role of a child--guess they were trying to subvert child labor issues.  But overall this was a nice discovery with some surprisingly gory scenes.

Yet another great restoration by Arrow Video, Dream Demon is featured here in a Director's Cut (the version I watched) as well as theatrical, with only a 1 minute difference at the very end.

    3 out of 5 stars.

The imaginary friend of a young boy might be more than imaginary, especially when bad things start to happen to the people around him.

This appears to be one of those Shudder films that wasn't good enough to find a home with Blumhouse (or god forbid, A24) and it is pretty thin on plot and budget, and comes in at a scant 83 minutes.  So, check your expectations at the door.  However, it does offer a few decent scares, a couple shocks, but plenty of flaws as well.  None of the characters feel lived in, most are unlikeable, even the usually reliable Stephen McHattie's character is paper thin and not given much to do.

I kind of admired the looney third act despite the constant strains on credulity, but more often this film felt like it was afraid to really commit to anything.  I can't decide if the bad CGI was a stylistic move (after all, this is supposed to be a child's imaginary friend), or just a budgetary constraint.  The film is often more bland than outright bad, it just seems like something that could have been done better.  But if you like movies with creepy kids, dark shadows in suburban homes, and a few "boo" type scares, this fits the bill.

Since Nightmare is an acknowledged classic I have reviewed here in prior years, I once again invited my 15-year-old daughter Jillian, who was seeing the film for the first time, to be the guest reviewer.  Take it away, Jillian!

A dead murderer is terrorizing and murdering teens through their dreams.

I found this movie to be actually frightening, and it had a good balance of things that scared me immediately, and things that stuck with me after the movie that frightened me. I found that the move was perfectly suspenseful, maintaining fear in the right places for the right amounts of time so that my interest didn't drop off. The dream logic was absolutely on point. I could honestly believe that those were real dreams that a person could actually have, unlike in some other movies that handle dreams. I'm looking at you, Inception.

I also really enjoyed the kills in this movie. They were very creative in my opinion, and thoroughly disturbing as well. The effects were absolutely fascinating, and I love them with all my heart. The mother in this movie actually scared me more than the rest of the movie did, because I just felt really bad for her and I could see where she was coming from, but also seeing her so broken was just horrific.

Near the end, the logistics of what a person could get done in a very short period of time were definitely stretched, but that's forgivable. The ending was a bit odd, but as somebody who often struggles with having dreams in dreams, I can easily see that just being another layer to a nightmare. However, it definitely felt unsatisfying and clunky to me. I would've found perhaps an inclination that he was in the real world much more effective, because even though that could've been the real world, it definitely felt like a dream. Overall, this was just a really good movie that really spooked me. I don't think it really introduced many new concepts to me or anything, but it was very well done.

I want to rate it higher than Dead Alive, but I don't feel like it's quite at five stars, so I'll just say that it's four and half out of five stars.

    4.5 out of 5 stars.

    38.  Bad Hair* -- 2020 -- Hulu

Well, while we all have bad hair days, this is focused on Black women's hair and how they are pressured to change who they are to be accepted.  The story was a bit messy -- black culture, slave stories, mythologies and witches, changing yourself to fit in, self hate -- all play out in this movie.   I heard the lesson they were teaching.

Be who you are.  Be proud of who you are. And don't let anyone tell you that you aren't a perfect version of you.
