Gunslinger Orchestral score
John Flynn has written a totally Orchestral “mock movie score” for The Gunslinger. It’s due for completion September but he's posted clips at his site.

Hey folks,
Just wrote to let you know that
The final product of the DARK TOWER
CD Soundtrack is still set for September
1st of this year. I took a vacation but I'm back
and everything's still on a viable course.
I've got good news too. I mapped
my progress of this whole thing out on a calendar and
figured, with my usual rate of a cue every
two days or so, I can get this done by early next
month or so. That will leave over two weeks for
any possible rewrites or whatever's left.
Later next month I'll make a final mix and press some
Free Review promos to send out. The FREE review promos apply to
those who are willing to review the final product on their site.
The regular promo will only cost maybe a little under ten dollars,
including a couple dollars for shipping and handling. Now, I'm still
shopping around for a label (I'm close on this) so this should be cheap
at the moment. Record executives have a tendency to follow the market
when
pushing
their merchandise on the public. It's my opinion that CDs cost too much
now anyway so I think a little under ten dollars is pretty good.
I've recently put together a temp mix to see what's at my disposal
with the soundtrack in it's current incarnation (where I'm standing at
the
moment-so to speak).
I've got over an hour or music but... I've got to tell you that I was a
little taken aback when
I first listened to everything chronologically. The music did something
that
I didn't originally intend
it to do. This can be interpreted as good news or bad news depending on
whoever's perspective is
taken more seriously (I think it's good)... but...
...the score I've written is a tad darker than I originally planned it
would
be.
The Man in Black's music, in particular, which I expected would surface
only
a couple
times throughout (enough to draw enough attention to it's self and be
instantly recognizable),
has ended up consuming a large portion of the score's tone and style. I
mean,
that's not really a complaint AT ALL, something being a tad too "dark"
or
"brooding". I love dark
music. It was more of a subconscious thing I did because while I was
re-reading the revised
Edition of The Gunslinger I was writing each cue simultaneously. While
re-reading I felt
that the man in black was hanging over the whole first book like a
thundercloud or something.
All I really did was put that feeling down into each other track.
Undoubtedly, the first book is, in terms of ambiguity, stylization and
the
gunslinger's "heartwarming"
compassion towards other people, the darkest chapter in the whole Tower
saga. Roland pretty much
damns himself by the end of the first book and it takes books 2 through
7 to
redeem him. If I ever get
to doing the sequels (I want to see how this first score does first )
the
growing lighter tones of the sequels
will come across ten-fold.
But Relax.
The music of this CD is not horror movie dark. It's not Freddy Krueger
music. It's not full-blown "Dark".
There are softer parts as well. The over-all style is at most closer to
Bernard Herrmann's or
Danny Elfman's way of doing things, with a musical timbre that has a
more
sneering or growling
sensibility to it. It's not really close to any contemporary music out
there
now (if you can understand
what I mean by "growling" and "sneering") so I don't know if I can make
any
more comparisons.
I was listening to a lot of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Herrmann, Korngold,
Elfman and Morricone. Maybe
That will give you an idea.
Regardless of anything though,
The CD's still set for September completion and that's when it will be
Done. A new update on the promo site is going to also happen next
month with much longer clips of all the tracks on the CD to give you a
better opinion of the quality and quantity.
Thanks.
Flynn.
