Stealing from the King at the Annoyance Theater
While the internet is buzzing with talk of masterful horror genre author Stephen King and sending him birthday wishes (born September 21st, 1947), a comedy troupe has already been celebrating their own love letter to him. Perfectly timed, Chicago group Awful People presents a sketch comedy show inspired by King, Stealing from the King: Unabridged, which is currently running on Thursdays at The Annoyance Theatre.
The plot follows a group spending quality time at a writing retreat in Maine, which goes painfully awry as they come across accomplished horror author Stephen King and decide to kidnap him. He desperately attempts to be the voice of reason, which doesn't go over well with the unstable group leader. Narrated by Gregory Hollimon, who portrayed the character “Principal Onyx Blackman” in Strangers with Candy on Comedy Central, as well as various film and television roles (The Fugitive, Chicago production The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue). Directed by Wolfgang Stein, the 55-minute production addresses countless King tropes within a story that frames a group of parody sketches.
The next show is this Thursday, September 25th at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20 or $15 for students. (Goldstar members pay $10.) The Annoyance Theatre and Bar, 851 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657. For info, call 773-697-9693.
