The Talisman movie

The Talisman Loses Another Director

Source: Variety Thursday, June 24, 2004

Variety says that just one month after director Ed Zwick replaced Vadim Perelman on DreamWorks' mystical The Talisman, he, too, is dropping out of the project. The problem was that the film wasn't creatively together in time for the start date. Shooting was originally slated to start in July, then September, then October.

The script, in particular, was a sticking point, adds the trade. Adapted by Ehren Kruger from Stephen King and Peter Straub's novel, the screenplay was reworked by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, but rewriting continues.

Steven Spielberg secured rights to the book, about a young man's journey to find a talisman that will save his mother's life, in the 1980s. The October shoot date has been cancelled and no other start date has been set. It was to be released in theaters next year.

  • I can't say this really surprises me. I won't believe this thing will ever get made until I actually see a finished movie.
  • yep - I'm not holding my breath on this one! :(
  • I really am not too upset about this. I think, as a lot of people do, that this book is going to be difficult to adapt into a good movie and I would rather have them not make a really bad film. Of course, I would love to see a good movie, but I would prefer no movie to a poorly made one.
  • Agreed - how one can condense the story into a 2 hour to 2 /12 hour movie is going to be no mean feat.

I could see a Vol 1/2 approach working....
  • i am REALYY REALLY sorry folks, but this BOOK could not sustain me more than a few chapters.

In all honesty, it actually turned me OFF S.K.!

You might say it was the colaboration between S.K. and P.S. but i dont know. It was extreamly hard for me to get into and i set it aside to try and continue with the D.T. series and finished the 2nd book after this.

To see it NOT be made into a movie, for me is understandable as its a hard book to translate into film form.

You NEED to get with a story thats hard to follow if you DONT know whats going on.

This is _MY_ opinion and its taken as you will.
  • Ratty, the Talisman is really hard for most people to get into...it's really confusing as I recall but.....after the first little bit things start to come together and it's one of his best books ever IMO. Give it another try when you have some time and just remember it soon gets better and then better and better!
  • Will do, but when i have finished i need to get through, The Wastelands and on wards for the DT books. So its not goin to be easy for me.

    *sigh*
  • It's not going anywhere Ratty...it will be ready for you when you are ready for it ;D (P.S. it's a great DT story)
