Those waiting on the next Stephen King novel can whet their appetites with a shorter burst of creativity now on sale on newsstands.
King has contributed a long, free-verse poem to the March issue of Playboy.
The poem, “Tommy,” coupled with an illustration by Kent Williams, is King taking a look back at simpler times.
The poem is set during King’s college years, the late 1960s, detailing events surrounding the funeral of his gay friend Tommy, who died of leukemia.
“Tommy” expands into a reminiscence of others such as Tommy who didn’t survive that era, who didn’t compromise their ideals as they grew older.
This poem finds King back in men’s magazines, where he first got published as a writer in the early ’70s. This is his fourth piece in Playboy in recent years, following the poem “The Bone Church” in 2009, the short story “Mule” in 2007 and the short story “Willa” in 2006.
