  • Info about Toronto and Baltimore area events now up at King's message board
  • Esquire reviewed Under the Dome positively in its new issue (11/09, page 40), and declared SK "the most underrated literary novelist" of our time.  (not a direct quote, the article isn't in front of me)

It is not online and I don't know if it ever will be.
  • They also reveal a lot about it, so read with caution!

    A hidden masterpiece

With less than a month left till the release of Under the Dome Hodder & Stoughton is kicking of a contest to celebrate the launch of the book. They are breaking the novel up into 5,196 pieces and then hiding the pieces for all of you to find.

The novel is going to be scattered across the internet and real world and it[ch8217]s now up to you to find it, bring them back to their site (site is not yet live) and try to piece the novel together before it is out on general release on November 10th.

And if you hadn[ch8217]t guessed it already there is one piece hidden here at Lilja[ch8217]s Library as well. Happy Hunting!
  • Short interview with King about the book, as well as a short letter. May contain mild spoilers.
  • Extracts of the book have been hidden across Stephen King fansites as well as horror, thriller and lifestyle websites, and offline.

Today Stephen King’s UK publisher Hodder & Stoughton launches the biggest ever game of literary hide-and-seek. His much-awaited epic novel UNDER THE DOME, featuring over 100 characters and running to 336,114 words, has been broken into more than 5,000 snippets (scattered across hundreds of websites and locations throughout the UK) as a way to celebrate the breadth of this masterpiece and to give fans a one-off opportunity to piece the book back together before its general release on 10th November.

Extracts of the book have been hidden across Stephen King fansites as well as horror, thriller and lifestyle websites, and offline. Fans are invited to continue this hiding process and also to find the snippets using the clues given on www.stephenking.co.uk and deliver them back to the website.

UNDER THE DOME is King’s most epic creation since THE STAND. The story explores what happens to a Maine town when an invisible barrier suddenly seals it off from the rest of the world, in a perfect example of a King thriller.

Speaking of the book, Stephen King comments:

“I tried this once before when I was a lot younger, but the project was just too big for me. But it was a terrific idea and it never entirely left my mind . . . and every now and then it would say write me, and eventually I did. I sure hope people like it.”

    More on the hide-and-seek

As pieces are found they will appear on www.stephenking.co.uk, enabling fans to move them around and link them together to form bigger sections of the book. Also on the site are clues to help ‘seekers’ find text and a forum for fans to discuss the snippets they’ve found.

All those playing the game to uncover this hidden masterpiece will be entered into a draw to win a weekend in a London hotel to read a limited edition copy of the book the weekend before its general release. Closing date is 6th November.

A creative writing competition also gives aspiring novelists the chance to have a 2,000-word piece of work judged by King himself.

The final pieces of the book will be released on Saturday, 7th November at a stunt in London, giving players a last-minute chance to piece together more snippets.

  • You'll find a piece buried in the dead zone.
  • Amazon and Wal Mart are now selling Under the Dome for $9. Here's a story on the front page of today's Wall Street Journal.

Book Battle Between Wal-Mart, Amazon Escalates

    John
  • I wonder how this will affect the Kindle release decision. I know that the low price of the Kindle version has been a big factor with publishers, since there was a belief that it would eat into the profits of the higher-priced hardcover.
  • On October 21st at 3pm EST, a new feature will be added to the Under the Dome Widget. The widget will feature a link to an interactive book cover, allowing you to explore the book a little more in depth prior to its release.
  • From the NY Times:

Publishers typically sell hardcover books to retailers at half the list price, while retailers set consumer prices. Most of the books discounted by Wal-Mart, Target and Amazon are listed at a minimum of $24. Mr. King’s novel has a list price of $35. At $8.99 or $8.98, that is about 75 percent off the list price.

When the price war began last week, Mr. King said he was “gobsmacked” by this turn of events, comparing it to gas stations in the 1970s that tried to undercut one another penny by penny.
  • New Stephen King e-book to cost $35--AP

Also, it won't be released until 12/24.
  • Christmas Eve -- wow! That must be one of the most expensive eBook novels ever.
  • I received my production copy of the book from Scribner today (they always follow up after the ARC with the real thing so you can verify quoted material hasn't changed). It's one hefty book.
  • Dear Constant Readers,

Please don’t believe the press reports that the e-book reader price for Under the Dome will be $35. This was the result of confusion from a press release from the publisher, what Big Jim Rennie would call a clustermug. It is true that you cannot order the book as an e-download until December 24th but the physical book, which is a beautiful thing, you can pre-order for less than $9—so who’s better than us?

    Steve
  • Well, after posting the misleading AP article and the incorrect Kirkus Reviews item in this thread, here goes nothing.

SK is quoted in this EW.com article about selling Under the Dome for $9 and the delay of the e-book to 12/24 thusly:

In an exclusive comment to EW, the author himself was more blunt [about the delay]: “It’s time to give the smaller bookstores a little breathing room (although not much chance of that, with Walmart offering Dome for nine bucks.)”

  • Entertainment Weekly will be publishing an excerpt of Under the Dome in their print magazine currently scheduled to be on stands on October 30th. The excerpt is not expected to be available on-line.

On Thursday, October 29th, the Under the Dome book trailer will premiere exclusively on EW.com and EW's Shelf Life Blog for one day only.

On Friday, October 30th, EW.com and EW's Shelf Life Blog will launch a short video of Stephen reading the first few pages of Under the Dome. This is also a one-day exclusive.
  • The promised excerpt from Under the Dome is indeed in the 11/6 issue. It appears as follows: page 32 has a short article on the book, with quotes from SK, page 33 is a picture of SK in his office, and the excerpt, with no illustrations, is on pp. 34-37. I haven't read it, but it appears to be about Big Jim Rennie.
  • I have abstained from reading the excerpts. Decided to go into this free and clear.
