Spidey, forgive my ignorance on this.

If the two eagle babes are a boy and a girl, can they grow up to be a mating pair or are they wired to find future partners unrelated? I know they aren’t human and thinking incest or about weakening their line, but is this something that is innate in them?

    they are getting huge.

No,it is generally unlikely that two eagles from the same nest would mate. This can also be said about mating with close relatives.  Once they fledge to their forever journey they usually do not stay together. It is a 5 year journey to adulthood in which over 50% do not survive the first year.

Inbreeding would have the consequence of a negative effect on the offspring. The Eagle's main aim is survival and propagation.

Eagles are know for their strong  pair bonding and monogamous breeding behavior.  Once a pair bonds it is usually for life.

  • Season 13 at SWFEC

The Hancock Forum for SWFEC Season 13 will be closed tomorrow, 4/27/25.
Even though the season ended in the terrible events of E24 and E25 passing
from the avian flu, they deserve to be remembered for the days they lived and flourished
and all the joy they gave to so many. I am so relieved that M15 and F23 were
strong enough to survive and to continue on hopefully for Season 14, God willing.
Thank you to everyone that contributed to the forum.
It is very important to me that the story is told about this special nest.
Special thanks to David Hancock, Judy B, and Mary F for this opportunity.
Thanks to Lady Hawk and Androcat for all the great videos and also to Androcat
for all your support in keeping me grounded and answering my questions.
I have reviewed all my screen captures of this season and have completed my collages
for the year. I hope you enjoy them. Please feel free to save for your own personal use.
All pics have been cropped and are property of SWFEC.

  • Dancing the ‘Fish Tussle’…
Left on their own after a full day, Gizmo was busy ‘winging’ when Sunny discovered a treasure in the nest. Curious Gizmo rushed over to see what had Sunny’s attention…ah ha! A fish!
When Gizmo decided the fish should be shared, a pull and tug game started with the fish in the middle and Sunny and Gizmo both testing their improved balance skills to keep hold on each end without falling.
Gizmo lost that one, so more wingersizing seemed to appropriate to get in shape, while Sunny carried the fish back and forth finding the best place to hide it, claim it with both feet and try harder to pull pieces off…
…but Gizmo found it anyway and pulled a few bits off before pulling the whole fish away. More tugging back and forth, Gizmo has it, no, Sunny has it, no Gizmo, no Sunny, Gizmo…oops. Gizmo dropped it behind a branch, but rescued it in time for Sunny to snatch it away again. This time Sunny tried to swallow the whole fish! But that didn’t work very well.
When Sunny moved further away, Gizmo tried taking it again and this time Sunny dropped it under a branch. Then more back and forth tussles…mine, no mine, I got it, no, I got it. Then Gizmo tried to swallow the whole thing. They both did get tiny pieces but neither one can claim to be a self-feeding expert yet.
Even though Sunny and Gizmo’s tussle was over food, it was a very peaceful dance back and forth. Gizmo eventually gave up, laid down and let Sunny have the fish. And of course, Jackie and Shadow each fed both chicks in the evening.
Yesterday, Gizmo and Sunny had their first experience of snowy weather on their own…and they were both fine. They have grown their waterproof feathers sufficiently to literally ‘weather the storm’, as the moisture just bubbles up and rolls off.
After the snow, they proved how strong they are with some serious wingers. First Sunny did a nice demo. With Gizmo’s turn, Sunny’s upside-down curious watching seemed to be cheering for more. Gizmo obliged with some great flapping.
    All great successes of independence!
But there still is nothing better than when Mama Jackie comes back to snuggle with her babies at the end of the day.

    Lessons to Learn…
Gizmo woke Sunny up early Thursday morning with a great big wing hug… or perhaps it was a love whack… either way, Sunny was awake! Sunny showed off the infamous foot raise which is common for eagles to rest the leg while perching. Gizmo seemed so fascinated by that!
Dad delivered a fresh fish mid-morning and as usual Jackie was close behind. She fed Sunny and Gizmo and of course included a few bites for herself. Shadow also brought a big pile of dried grass and both chicks helped spread it around to soften their nest floor and cozy bed.
Jackie took off from the front porch and returned with a humongous stick shaped like a pitchfork. She carefully moved it here and there, finally settling on the perfect place… whew! After she left though, Sunny must have felt energetic, so with Gizmo's help they rearranged the giant stick, hoping Mama wouldn't notice.
The chicks then discovered a couple of new pine cones in the nest, which gave them some fun new toys to peck, tear apart and move around. They did forget, however, to pick up their new awkward pokey toys before running, hopping and jumping around the nest during wingersize practice… oops!
Jackie and Shadow also had another opportunity for a teachable moment. Shadow only delivered 2 fish on Thursday in comparison to 9 the day before. The chicks had full crops so they could actually eat less food for a few days. These valuable survival skills will certainly be helpful on days when they are on their own and hungry.
At day's end, Shadow brought a very small fish which Sunny quickly stepped on and claimed. Sunny got in some nice assertive bites before Jackie moved in expecting to feed them.
Sunny raised his foot releasing the fish, so Mom picked up the fish in her beak. A sneaky Gizmo stepped in, grabbed it from Mom and quickly wolfed it down! Sunny looked a bit stunned, but also learned a valuable lesson about guarding food. Turnabout is fair play though since Sunny stole a small fish from Gizmo just the day before and swallowed it whole… priceless!
What a treasure it is to be able to observe this family as they teach their young ones these powerful life skills and lessons!

  • Sunny Branches

Sunny is 62 days old, Gizmo is 58 days old. Sunny ventured to the Back Porch today and officially branched at 62 days,. The Back Porch provides an easier, walk on access. The Front porch is harder to access as it requires jumping down. How To Tell Sunny And Gizmo Apart? Tip #1 Heads: Gizmo's gape (the yellow corner of the mouth) is more orange in color with a thicker lower "lip". This gives them the whimsical "Mona Lisa smile". Sunny's gape is not curved; it mostly appears as a straight line. Tip #2 Tails: Sunny has a longer tail due to being 4 days older. Also, on Sunny's tail you can notice the beginnings of the "whitewash". Gizmo's tail is shorter and mostly black (for now). 🐥Misty hatched 3/3 23:26 | Sunny hatched 3/4 4:29 | Gizmo hatched 3/8 before 6:13 🐥Misty, who sadly passed away during a winter storm after 3/13/2025, was named in honor of Kathi Misterly, a very dedicated FOBBV volunteer who was lost to cancer and is still very missed.💔 ℹResident Bald Eagle male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014 ℹResident Bald Eagle female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

  • Gizmo Branches

Sunny is 66 days old, Gizmo is 62 days old. ✈️Fledge watch begins 5/13! Eaglets have a very wide fledge window - 10-14 weeks. It is a wait and see who fledges first and when. We may have to wait several weeks. No rush, Sunny & Gizmo!🤗 Sunny branched to the BP on 5/5, Gizmo branched to the BP on 5/9.

  • SWFEC banner reports "5-11. Happy Mother's Day. No Eagles in view. 8:16am the outer attic branch has fallen from the nest tree. The main attic branch is attached it cracked more and dropped down. The nest looks ok. " It was a beautiful sunrise at the nest this morning to celebrate Mother's Day! However, at 08:16am the nest tree outer attic branch broke off and fell to the ground. The attic branch also breaks and is hanging down (still attached) to the nest tree but is compromised. These two branches were the mainstay perches for Harriet and Ozzie, Harriet & M15 and M15 & F23. Also they were the main branches that eaglets would branch to and also fledge from over the years. The branches became compromised from Hurricane Ian and other hurricanes over the recent years. I included video of the outer attic branch breaking off plus SWFEC diagrams of the location and nest tree branch names. Included are photos taken today from Barb Henry Photography & MLiz Photos showing the before & after photos of the branch breaking off. At the end of the video I included photos of Harriet and M15 with E19 & E20 on these very branches to show how much they were utilized and will be missed! Timestamps are provided below. Wskrsnwings stated: "When the SWFEC cams first went live in 2012, we only had one cam. And that was the nest cam which was a fixed cam. When we initially identified the branches the adults would sit on, we thought the outer attic branch was actually an extension of the main attic branch. And then a year or two later we realized the outer attic and attic branches were actually separate branches, but they were rubbing against each other. The outer attic branch actually originated from a lower branch in the nest tree. Over the seasons we realized that some of the branches had cracks, and eventually the outer attic branch cracked enough to make it bend. But it still held close to the main attic branch. This morning, the outer attic branch cracked the rest of the way pushing/pulling the main attic branch down and out in front of the nest tree. So the main attic branch is still attached to the main trunk but the outer attic branch broke away from its originating lower branch (under the nest) and fell to the ground."

  • Wow. So will the eagles not trust the nest now and relocate?
    GNTLGNTFlakeNoir
  • It will be a wait and see.  Thus far the nest is intact and secure.  Just not as many branches for branching .  It was Ian, I believe, that caused destruction of the nest and they rebuilt it before nesting season began.  It's up to M and F.

  • 5-15-2025 Season 13 has officially come to a close. Although it wasn't what we had hoped for, M15 and F23 survived. They visit on and off while on vacation. Thank you for all your support. Fly forever free E24 and E25. See you in the fall.
