  • February 21, 2025 - Tactical moves…

    Eagle Update Pictures

Since the weather has been warm, Jackie has spent a little more time off the nest which also gives Shadow a little more egg time. They have been protecting the nest well and the eggs are covered consistently. Fiona, the night time squirrel visitor, who has been insistent on her nest visits, has been getting a few wing slaps from an observant Jackie. Shadow has been bringing in at least one fish gift daily for Jackie… yesterday he brought both lunch and dinner for his queen!

Two days ago, Shadow began Daddy duty early by bringing in a stick in his beak. After spending time on the eggs, his next delivery was a big pile of dried grass. He took a beakful and dropped it on top of Jackie's head as she was softly whining. Shadow seems to enjoy placing his fish gifts and other deliveries as close to Jackie's head as possible… or right on top of her!

Jackie has different tactics. She slowly inches her way in beside Shadow and gives a beak kiss along with some little feathered head nibbles. If needed, she will throw in some soft twerpling for good measure and then step closer yet… that usually does the trick!

Shadow was awake extra early yesterday and called out to Jackie. She gave word she was not quite ready and tucked back in for a little more shuteye. They both had a busy day working together to shoo off some vocal ravens. After giving chase, Shadow went fishing for his lady love and when she began to eat, he smoothly slid down on the eggs. Jackie also brought in a long bendable straw reed that she had some fun with. She also designed a nice triangular necklace with it before it became part of the nest.

Once again, Jackie and Shadow have shown their ability to adapt to spontaneous situations that occur that are out of their control. Since the SDS tree fell during the last storm, they are finding sticks elsewhere to continue nest building. Their pairbond remains strong and when away from the nest, they are choosing to spend more time on all their other favorite trees.

We are counting down to Pip Watch which begins March 1st!

  • This year we start Pip Watch on March 1. Historically, our first egg hatched around 38-39 days but with three eggs it may take a bit longer. Happy watching!

  • March 2, 2025 - Hello everyone,

    Eagle Update Pictures

INITIAL PIP HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TODAY AT 15:09. THE PIP IS CIRCLED IN THE PICTURE.

Congratulations Jackie and Shadow and the entire eagle family! We’ve been waiting for almost 3 years.

Jackie and Shadow’s previous chick Spirit pipped exactly 3 years ago to the date.

Hatching is a long process. It may take a day or more for the chick to fully emerge from the shell. Meanwhile, we will remain patient and hold the most positive thoughts.

  • Today at 10:21 we spotted Pip movement in the third egg. You can see the chick's beak moving inside the egg. At 10:53 the Pip site looked a bit larger.
We are under snowy weather today. Jackie and Shadow may hunker down for the whole day and skip the feedings, even though there is plenty of food on the nest. Protecting the chicks from the elements is very important.
They ate very well and had very full crops yesterday, so they should be fine for a few days on the contents of their crops.
Hatching is a long process. It may take a day or more for the chick to fully emerge from the shell.
We are expecting sunny weather tomorrow. Just in time for the new Chick3!
Meanwhile, we will remain patient and hold the most positive thoughts.
