Stephen King: A Half Century of Scares
Host Meg Wolitzer presents two stories from a live evening at Symphony Space celebrating the prolific writer Stephen King. It was hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead.
The program presents King in two different modes: the legendary scare-master who entered the horror genre with Carrie, and the author of stories that draw on memory and family like “The Last Rung on the Ladder.” An excerpt from Carrie is read by Carrie Coon, and “The Last Rung on the Ladder” is read by John Benjamin Hickey. Colson Whitehead speaks briefly from the stage.
Poetry & the Creative Mind is presented by the Academy of American Poets.
This celebratory broadcast features actors, artists, and leaders from across the arts and honors poetry's important place in our society and its impact on the lives of readers.

We’re giving you plenty of time to get in your questions as King prepares to take the reader interview chair for an expanded edition ahead of the release of The Life of Chuck starring Tom Hiddleston, based on his 2020 novella. His only notes so far are: no “lemon” questions, such as where he gets his ideas from. But where does he get his ideas from? How does he feel about being one of the bestselling US authors of all time? Does he really suffer from triskaidekaphobia – an irrational fear of the number 13? And does he really hate interviews as much as he says he does?
Please pose your questions in the comments below by 6pm on Monday 4 August and we’ll print his best replies in G2 and online later that month – but not on the 13th, we promise, Stephen.
It'll will go live on Monday 8/25 in the morning and Stephen will be back on Wednesday 8/27 at 3:00 PM ET to answer questions. Please stop by if you have any questions for Stephen

One of the world’s most successful authors answers readers’ questions on his sources of inspiration, the colour of fear, knowing when to quit – and why manual labour is invaluable for writers
Bangor’s own Stephen King attended a book release in the Queen City Tuesday evening at Bookspace on Columbia Street.
Three of the 36 authors, Richard Chizmar, Catherynne M. Valente, and Michael Koryta, who worked with him on the new book The End of the World As We Know It spoke about it and their creative processes.
The book itself is an anthology of short stories building upon The Stand, King’s longest work.
King authorized it and wrote the book’s introduction.
It was released worldwide on August 19th.
Gibran Graham, who owns The Briar Patch Bookstore in Bangor tells us he’s already sold out, though he has more copies on the way.
We asked Stephen King what it felt like to have other authors expand on his original story.
“It feels really good. I mean I think it’s nice that they care enough to do that and that they remember the book and carry it to another generation. So, I think that’s great,” said King
“The authors did these events all across the country including Canada and London. So, it really was sort of worldwide. It’s pretty good to be included and have that happen here in Bangor,” Graham stated.
King spoke also spoke about his writing process in The Stand at the end of the Q and A with the authors.
When he didn’t know where to go in its plot, he said he took the advice of novelist Raymond Chandler who said to have a man come in with a gun.
Patton Oswalt, director Karyn Kusama, and film scholar Alexandra Heller-Nicholas also appear in Alexandre O. Philippe's new documentary championing the all-time horror classic.
“Every frame has something unnerving in it,” Patton Oswalt says in the trailer for Chain Reactions—a new documentary about the enduring influence and impact of 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Tobe Hooper’s grisly classic has often been imitated and has spawned some regrettable sequels and remakes, but the original remains a uniquely terrifying product of a very specific time and place, not just in pop culture, but also in the realms of independent cinema.
A new trailer for Chain Reactions is here, and it gives you a good idea of how it’s structured, focusing on five Texas Chain Saw fans in particular. Along with Oswalt, there’s Stephen King, Takashi Miike (director of Audition and Ichi the Killer), horror scholar Alexandra Heller-Nichols, and Karyn Kusama (director of Jennifer’s Body). As Texas Chain Saw‘s creepy hitchhiker might say, “A whole family of Draculas!”
It’s helmed by Alexandre O. Philippe, whose other films-on-film include Doc of the Dead, Psycho study 78:52, Memory: The Origins of Alien, and Lynch/Oz.
