Sorvino in the House

I spent last night revising the four-year-old short story that was just returned to me (see yesterday’s post). I didn’t think I’d be doing much to it, but it’s actually getting a pretty intensive workout. This morning I added another 1600 words to the novel-in-progress and am now rapidly closing in on the 30K mark. Tomorrow, unless something goes amiss.

Still working on The Appeal by Grisham. Though the characters are well-enough sketched, there’s no intimacy with them, and if you asked me the name of the main characters, I don’t think I could come up with more than a couple. And there are quite a few, which is a bit of a problem. The ones that stands out most clearly at this point is the pawn who is being maneuvered into running to upset the supreme court judge, and the targeted judge herself. The characters from Part 1 are grappling for attention but are mostly on the back burner for the time being.

The post-Super Bowl episode of House was quite good. Mira Sorvino played a psychiatrist stuck at the South Pole suffering (big surprise) a mysterious ailment that gets worse the moment House starts diagnosing her. Sorvino’s character was very well done, a worthy foil for House, and she raised some interesting aspects of the acerbic doctor’s personality. I also like it that “13” continues to call House on his B.S. There was a funny meta-reference to watching network TV on Tuesday nights. And the surprise appearance of “Cut-throat bitch” at the end looks like something that will pay dividends down the road. Maybe tonight, even.

Auctions of the eight nursing and “end of life” themed books I have on eBay end this evening. Check ’em out and get a deal if it’s something you’re looking for. Since they don’t seem very popular this way, I may end up listing them on Amazon. We’re trying to empty a shelf or two on our walls.
