League of Extraordinary Gentlemen [and woman]

My daughter gave me this DVD for Christmas, so we watched the movie yesterday afternoon. I had no familiarity with the graphic novel or the film, so I went into it cold. It was a decent flick with some pretty impressive special effects. I was surprised by the drubbing it gets on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering only a 16% rating. Granted there were a few issues here and there with character motivation and pacing, but we all enjoyed it. It certainly opens well, with the Africa scene and the recruitment of Quartermain. The mid-film twist was a surprise. Certain elements of what happens toward the end were easily predicted by anyone paying attention to the dialog (especially the scene between Harker and Grey), but we liked it well enough.

I finished my Season 3 refresher of LOST yesterday afternoon. Now there’s but four weeks to wait until the beginning of Season 4. I can barely stand to wait that long. We’re almost done with Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, too. The “Q Who” episode where the Borg were introduced was actually a bit of a disappointment. We were all sitting around saying “get the hell out of there” as the crew went from one meeting to another when it was patently obvious they were massively outgunned.

I haven’t done any new writing for the past couple of weeks, but I’m gearing up to tackle a novel. Perhaps I’ll start on Monday when things are more or less back to normal. I was thinking about starting on January 1, for purely symbolic reasons, but that wasn’t practical. I spent my little time online yesterday spreading the word about my new story at Horror World and checking up on response to same. I’m at work again today after a five-day weekend, so I’m easing back into my regular schedule. I did manage to keep short stories in circulation, resubbing the ones that were handed back to me over the holidays.

Addendum: You can vote my short story “Sufficiently Advanced” at the Preditors and Editors’ annual poll if you feel so inspired!
