Chapped

Made some progress into new territory on the story in progress this morning. I started by editing the last page or so and then convinced myself to keep going and wrote perhaps seven hundred words. I’m getting a better feel for where things are going to end up, which is helpful.

Last night I finished writing my lengthy (1300 word) review of The Queen of Bedlam by Robert McCammon. I previewed it to a McCammon expert and will add it to Onyx Reviews shortly before the book comes out in October. I also darkened the text on my reviews because someone told me the pale brown was hard to read against the white background.

I watched Eureka last night. The show really focuses on the relationship between the sheriff and his daughter these days, and does so with some effective metaphors. Last night it was Matt Frewer’s character and his errant robotic Canada geese. The episode was less about the science fair than the previews would have had us believe, but I enjoyed it all the same.

I wrote a short story called “Overtoun Bridge” for a themed anthology a while back. Though the theme and genre got me going on the story, my main character took me off in a different direction so that the resulting story was only remotely related to the theme and it wasn’t really in the desired genre any more, so I wasn’t surprised when the anthologists rejected it. (Said anthology folded in due course.) I submitted it one other place but it was rejected after several months. However, never despair! A publisher recently approached me about doing a story as a chapbook and “Overtoun” seemed like a good fit. Found out today it will be published sometime in the not-too-distant future, though none of the details can be revealed yet at this point. Suffice to say that I’m pleased this special story—one of my best, in my biased opinion—will see the light of day, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this publisher does with it.
