June showers bring…July showers

It’s raining again today, if anything more copiously than last month. The next two or three days are supposed to be soggy. We don’t have to worry about fires from pyrotechnics on Wednesday, but we should be concerned that people might drown while out looking at the sky hoping to see them.

I was lazy this weekend. I had great plans to revise the new short story and I didn’t. Took a vacation, for the most part. Yesterday was Canada Day, after all. I did work on a book review, which I hope to finish and post to Onyx this week. I read a little. Spent most of the day yesterday watching the concert for Diana while Wiki’ing some of there performers I wasn’t familiar with. Take That was a discovery—I might have to buy their new album. Kanye West was the only performance that was totally unwatchable. Diddy was a surprise. Joss Stone—it’s hard to believe she’s my daughter’s age. What pipes—and more than that, what musical sensibility. I probably won’t buy one of her albums because I’m not that big a fan of her kind of music, but I was impressed by the way she put her performance together. The broad spectrum of performances—from classic rock to contemporary to hip-hop/funk to rap to ballet and showtunes—was impressive.

Last night I watched the final two episodes of the current season of Doctor Who. An impressive ending to a strong season. I like it when writers can push a story beyond the comfort level to a place where viewers can’t envision a way that things can ever be the same again, go two or three steps over the cliff into freefall, and then find a satisfying way to wrap it up. I’ll admit I wasn’t terribly thrilled to see Torchwood Jack back again, but by the end of the first episode he appeared in I wasn’t minding it so much. The guy who played Saxon was clearly having a blast, and he was an excellent counterpoint to Tennant. In fact, some of his mannerisms seemed to ape Tennant’s but they gave the viewer a totally different impression than the zanyisms of the Doctor. Only six months to wait for the next episode. I think I hear drums beating.

I did get back to the manuscript this morning, but I only rewrote the first two pages of the 19-page manuscript. The deadline is the end of the month, so I really do need to get serious about it, but this weekend was a nice respite, and I’ll have Wednesday this week to make up for lost time.
