On the Fringe

FringeTonight is lost–or, rather, Lost. A total immersion in one of my favorite television experiences. They’re hosting a big public viewing at a place downtown, with Houston Chronicle bloggers and big screens, but I think I’m going to be the introvert that I am and stay home and watch it by myself.

For some reason, I thought the CBS shows were having their finales last night, but they weren’t–not until next week. I’m going to be on the road for most of next week, so my DVR is going to be working overtime. I’ll miss the Survivor finale, 24, and the Tuesday night shows. Maybe I’ll watch ’em on Hulu, which isn’t a bad option. I watched the “Three Kings” episode of Family Guy on Hulu. I’ve never watched the show before, and I have a general aversion to that type of show (The Simpsons, King of the Hill, etc.) It had its moments as parody, but mostly I just shrugged at myself when it was over.

Last night’s finale of Fringe was quite good, and advanced the mythos substantially. Hmmm, time traveling in Lost and Star Trek and multiverses in Fringe. Do ya think this is the right guy for the Dark Tower series? The reveal with Walter at the graveyard was pretty cool. One wonders at what point Walter recovered what he lost and how old Peter was when he lost it. Leonard Nimoy looked much less haggard than he did as Spock, though one has to wonder how much an actor gets paid for a guest appearance that consists of about 12 seconds of camera time. Never fear, he’ll be back, but not until the fall.

I received the new Michael Connelly novel, The Scarecrow, from the publisher last night. Can’t wait to tear into it, but I might hold off so I can take it with me while traveling this weekend. Instead, after finishing The Rules of the Game I picked up Shivers V from the TBR pile and read three stories. It’s been a while since I read an anthology. I know editors often dither a great deal over story order, but I tend to read anthologies randomly. Sometimes I choose a story based on the order, and other times I pick one that’s the right length for the amount of time I have. (On the other hand, I almost always listen to music albums in order, and have never used the random shuffle option on my iPod. I’m very much an AOR kinda guy, even if the R isn’t AO.)

My next book, due out in September, is headed to the printer on Friday, so it’s one step closer to being a reality. One huge step.
