My four-day training session ended yesterday at 4:15, so I promptly got into my car and drove back home. I’m glad my iPod was working again, as the music made the time fly by. Listening to the radio is okay, but I like listening to complete albums better, especially when I’m cruising down the highway.
I thought the traffic might be bad outbound from Austin at that time of day, rush hour and all, but it wasn’t. The worst part of getting out of Austin is the fact that the highway, 290, has traffic signals for the first fifteen miles or slow, which slows things down considerably. They should think about overpasses one of these days. Great things, overpasses.
I made good time, even though I stuck pretty close to the speed limits. When I reached Brenham, I decided to take the shorter route rather than the “faster” route, according to Google maps. It involves taking an FM road (Farm-to-Market) for about 30 miles, but at least I didn’t have to go into Houston and back out again. FM roads in Texas are randomly numbered. The one I took was 1488. 1489 is probably over in El Paso, for all I know. In intersects FM2978. I’m sure there must be some rhyme or reason to the numbering, but nobody’s explained it to me in the twenty years I’ve been living here.
It’s always good to get home, sleep in your own bed. After four days of sitting in a chair all day long, I was able to go back to work today…and sit in a chair all day long. It’s what I do, but it’s my chair, and I didn’t have to wait for official breaks to get out of it.
I got caught up on a couple of shows I missed earlier this week. The Big Bang Theory was pretty funny. It usually is when Sheldon and Penny are the focus, as they were this week with Penny’s little glitter business. How I Met Your Mother was funnier than usual, especially the bit with Robin on television in the background as the others ignored her. I’ve always thought Ted and Robin should be together. Now at least they’re fall-back spouses. Grey’s Anatomy is picking up again, too. I like it that Alex is getting his moment in the spotlight. He’s losing some of his sullenness and is proving that he has the potential to be a very good surgeon.
I finished Eclipse by Richard North Patterson the other evening. He didn’t take the easy way out, by any stretch of the imagination. Good book. Review to come, when I get a chance.
It was brought to my attention that the issue of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine containing my story “Wake Me Up For Meals” is available for download on Fictionwise.
