A cold front swept across the state last night. It arrived at about 9 pm with a heavy rainfall that sounded at first like hail. Yesterday at this time it was in the 70s; today, the 40s.
The U.K. Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) has set up a Facebook page and online survey in an effort to persuade public broadcaster BBC to replace David Tennant on Doctor Who with a woman. Among the female actors suggested for the role are Alex Kingston, Helen Mirren, comedian Jenny Eclair or Bond girl Olga Kurylenko. Opinions? It would certainly change the tenor of the show.
Today’s word for the day is “prorogue.” It doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, does it? I feel like I’m trying to make dog barking noises when I say it. Unless you live in a country with a parliament, it’s not a word you’re ever likely to use. Today, Governor General Jean agreed to prorogue the Canadian parliament until late January. Since Prime Minister Harper was facing a vote of non-confidence, he asked the GG to suspend parliament, effectively heading the palace coup off at the pass…for now. So, no government business will be transacted until late January, bringing any new or pending legislation to a standstill. It’s an effort on his part to let tempers cool and try to redeem his situation, but I suspect that it is only delaying the inevitable, and putting the country in a legislative time-out during a delicate moment in world history.
House’s practical joke on his team last night was priceless. I thought at first that he had conceived of the joke only after the patient was admitted, but he instigated the whole thing from the beginning. Well played. The way the two duffuses jumped back when she returned from the dead was great.
Elton John was the first guest on Elvis Costello’s new show Spectacles on the Sundance Channel. I only saw snippets of it, but enough to know that I want to see the whole interview, which airs again tonight at 10 pm Central. They talk about musical influences and share a few tunes.
