Canada: still zero

I’m nearing the end of Red Dragon. Harris seems to find it necessary to explicate his monsters. The forward momentum of the book is spoiled by several chapters that delve back to the killer’s childhood and the series of circumstances that created him. I never cared for the idea that Harris decided to give Hannibal a backstory to explain where he came from, too (a backstory, I might add, that is somewhat at odds with what is “known” about him from Red Dragon). To me it seems to rob Hannibal of some of his potency and intrigue. Once I’m finished the book, I’m going to watch the first movie adaptation, Manhunter, which I think I’ve seen before but I can’t be sure.
