I put in another thousand words this morning on the novel in progress. I had less time than usual to work today—Friday’s are like that. However, I made forward progress into a new chapter and left things in a good place for when I get back to the story again on Monday morning.
I watched the first episode of Season 2 of Torchwood last night. It was a good re-immersion in the series. By bringing in this guy from Jack’s past, they were able to reintroduce all the characters to viewers through his eyes. As far as plot went, it was a little thin, but they have many more episodes to tell us good stories. I like it that Gwen got engaged—that keeps the poor sod on the hook and drives a wedge between her and Jack that they’ll have to deal with.
The season premiere of LOST was well worth the wait. I like it that they went Hurley-centric instead of one of the more traditional central characters here. There was the expected number of WTF moments and some terrific teases and lures. Hurley is one of the great character creations in modern television, and he got to run the gamut of emotions in this episode. I liked the way he so eagerly latched onto the notion of being committed. One challenge we’ll have this season is putting the flash-forwards into the proper chronology. Clearly Hurley’s story took place before Jack’s at the end of last season. I am so psyched that the show is on again.
I started John Grisham’s new novel, The Appeal last night. Right from the get-go there’s no question about who the good guys are and who are the villains. Hopefully he’ll add some color to both so it isn’t just a David and Goliath story.
Here’s an update on the Liar’s Diary blog initiative last week. Nearly 400 people participated, and the elusive Amazon rating for the book moved to #1 in mystery by the end of the day and from 55,000 at the start of the day to 375 overall by the evening. The National Post in Canada covered the event and reported that the article was their third most-read online article ever.
