Man, that’s one of those ideas that I wish I would have come up with—a police forensics expert who is himself a serial killer. I watched the first episode of Dexter on CBS last night (from tape), and I’m already starting to see what all the fuss has been about. The show is clever and saucy. I love the idea that Dexter’s father knew what he was and found a way to turn him into a useful member of society. I love the idea that he works among a bunch of cops and only one of them has any inkling that there’s anything wrong with him. He’s a little bit too self-consciously aware of his insufficiencies, but I put that down to the requirements of the medium to get certain things across quickly in the establishing episode. There were a couple of baffling commercial breaks, which are probably caused by the editing to get this on network TV, and I wish someone would find a better replacement for Samuel L. Jackson’s favorite twelve-letter word than “mother lover,” which is simply ludicrous, but I’m hooked.
My two novelty auctions are ending today, promo items for Duma Key and From a Buick 8.
I have a new review up at Onyx: Restitution by Lee Vance. A decent first novel.
Tomorrow night is eclipse night. Hope the weather is cooperative.
To serve the needs of our increasing foreign viewership, Storytellers Unplugged now has a dashboard option that allows posts to be translated into a dozen languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic. At first I was skeptical, but the French translation of my most recent post was pas trop pire.
