Autumn Scruggs (Key Make-up)
Turtle
Bay: Tell us about your background in the field of makeup.
I have been doing makeup for almost six years. I started out doing peers for
proms and homecomings. I then expanded onto weddings. I finally realized that I
had bigger dreams and attended the Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts to
specialize in media makeup. I now do makeup for mostly television and music
videos.
Turtle Bay: Tell the fans what makeups you worked on in
Gotham Cafe.
I pretty much did the leads Humbolt, Guy( pre-episode) Steve, and Diane.
Turtle Bay: What led you into the field of makeup?
I have always been fascinated with makeup. I love how such a simple task
could cause such effects (beauty or special effects.) So when everyone was
picking there career in high school because of their loves in life. It only made
since to go into the career that I loved and considered myself good at.
Turtle Bay: What was your most memorable experience
working on the film?
Definitely the scene of the chef getting gutted. It was Mike Pack, Joseph
Saunders, and me pumping Blood, Bile, and Urine. That isn't something you see
everyday.
Turtle Bay: You are well versed in both special effects
and beauty makeup. Which is your favorite and why?
You know I am still trying to discover that myself. I love them both but it
seems I do more beauty makeup when I work.
Turtle Bay: You created a seamless look for each
character that speaks to the audience. With your makeup you tell us about Diane,
Steve and Guy. Could you tell us what you looked for in each character and how
you brought that quality out in the actor?
Well with Chaney's character Steve, I made him look a little tired. Other
than that I kept it really simple. He's a guy's guy and I didn't want to make
him look like a pretty boy. With Julie's character Diane, I really just followed
Julies instructions. She knew what she wanted to portray in her character, and I
hope that I created what she had in mind. On Guy I was very fortunate because
Mike Pack had already created his look for when he went crazy, and my assistant
Sara DePue did a fabulous job recreating that. I did however do his look before
he had his episode, and again I just portrayed him as I would an everyday man
with problems.
Turtle Bay: Can you let us know what a typical day is
like in the life of a makeup artist?
Well I usually have a really early call time so I wake up pretty early. I
have to have the talent ready for the first shot. Then I am on set ready to do
touch ups or any corrections that may need to be changed due to lighting.
Average day is 12-14 hours long. It can be very fast paced when talent is
needed, but it is pretty relaxed while I am on set. But I do have to say I
really have never had the same experience on any job. Every job has been
different. However, that is why I love what I do!
